Well, I had been to a circus at one point, and I was recovering from mastoid surgery, and my dad suggested I make some posters for an imaginary circus. I had heard somewhere that horses couldn't swim, so I did a poster advertising a "SWIMING HORSE!" Dad pointed out that to make a vowel short, you had to double the following consonant, and it should be "swimming". Later I got promoted from Lower Kindergarten to Upper Kindergarten because I recognised the word "summer" (double consonant). Thank you, Swiming Horse.

I had lots of TLC and don't remember a lot of pain from the surgeries, but I do from the earache that led to it. I had a burst eardrum which was cauterised for 2 years, once a week, and rebuilt. Hearing was fine. Then at 13 I got caought in a breaker (roller) at Jones Beach in NY and it burst again so I don't hear well in that ear.

I broke my foot during a matinee performance in the Cinderella pantomime - got up after the fall and finished the performance, trying to ignore the pain. Then was taken over to the hospital and treated - had to have a minor op under a local anaesthetic to remove a fragment of chipped bone, then had the foot and ankle spinted and bandaged up. Returned from there to the theatre, to do the evening performance - delivering my lines from a wheelchair! :P
