well, for starters, he has lizards, and i know from personal experience, it can be difficult to keep the cats away from them.
secondly, i knew we would be moving around a bit too often + thats not really fair to the cats.
thirdly, most of my friends are allergic.
fourthly, at the time, i was working 2 jobs and rarely home, and they deserved a person who would be around to play with them...

many more reasons.
it was tough, and i miss them dearly...
