I will do a story of clues as I aw 5/10 to enter my last word. I was supposed to goto Taste of Danbury, but plans went aw4/10 after hubby and I had a spat. We had a cr 4/5is with Jack which sparked the spat. My dog's ga 4/6 was sort of off & we had to bring him to the vet. We had to take a ta 4/9 to the vet because we ran out of gas and that's what started the spat. I often let my car run out of gas&it drives hubby nuts! Min - a simple, stupid accident that happened in a second. I fell backwards out of an loose slipper off about the 4th or 5th stair up. My foot jerked down and back quite violently and I fell backwards down the stairs to the floor below. Didn't hit my head or injure any other part of myself, but, as soon as the foot sliiped, I felt the pain.

My other half had a ball of varicose vein removed from his left testicle. He was in so much pain afterwards and everything swole up to an alarming degree and turned black. He was told that the problem might recur, and it did within 3 months of the op. So, he has a constant, nagging, aching, dragging pain again but isn't going near a surgeon again.

I went to the hospital with my Mum today to be 'the responsible adult' to be 'in charge of her' after her routine colonoscopy. We did wonder if me being on crutches might be a problem there, but no one mentioned it. Babble let me down, only being about 53 words, which I'd done before I even finished my morning cuppa. Normally, I print the grid out and take it with me to do whilst I'm waiting. I made do with a short story magazine and a crossword, plus some cheese and tomato sandwiches, a banana and a bottle of water. (I hid behind the door to partake of the food and drink, since you're not supposd to eat or drink in the waiting room, since people who have been starving and shitting for two days might also be in there. I was alone in the makeshift waiting room - the hospital is being rebuilt and the purpose-built Bums Department has been split at present. However, both the nurse and the receptionist who came to find me when Mum was ready to go home 20 mins before anticipated failed to find me. Obviously, neither of them have very good detection skills. Nor could they have called out, rather than just looked into the room. DUH!

Glad to report that no bowel polyps were found this time. However, they did find two pockets of diverticulitis (that's when, with age, the bowel wall relaxes/stretches in places, thus making a dip where food or faeces can lie and potentially go bad and cause infections that can lead to death). They've told Mum she doesn't need to go back now unless she 'has any polyp symptoms' and that there's no need to go back if she has diverticulitis symptoms 'unless it's obviously an infection' or she's 'in pain'. I looked up the symptoms for both and they are very similar. I told her,

'Any symptoms at all - just go back! You don't want to end up dying of bowel cancer after all you've been through to prevent it!'

She agrees.

The nurse who booked her in, told us a couple of interesting things. First of all, when I said that I'd noticed they now had a 'capsule room' - that's a capsule you swallow with a video camera in it that tracks through the whole of your bowel, results captured on its exit - she told me it was a waste of time doing that. I asked why, because I thought it sounded a heck of a lot better than the starving and shitting process, even though you do have to spend a day in hospital. She said that, at present, the doctors never trust those results and always want to go in and have a look to double check anyway. Same applies to the newly-available CT scans. Let's hope they've got over those prejudices when I'm due for my next colonoscopy in 2012.

Second interesting new development she informed us of was that, whenever they remove a polyp during a colonoscopy these days, they mark the place by tattooing a small blue spot on the bowel wall.

'If removal of a section of bowel becomes necessary,' she told us, 'Then it saves the surgeon having to guess how much.'

'BLOODY HELL!' said I. 'They GUESS?' I can't tell you the picture that came into my head then, but I expect you can imagine a Monty Python type scene.

I also wondered if they tattoo a blue dotted line with a scissor sign for 'CUT HERE' at either end of the section of bowel in question.

Mum said, 'Well, it'd be first for me to get a tattoo!'

'Me, too,' I said. ' But you could be all mysterious by telling people that you have tattoos... in places they can't see.'

The nurse said, 'Well, if they do find anything, I'm going to tattoo 'ANITA WOZ 'ERE' on your bowel.'

How comforting!

I awoke from what I thought was supposed to be gallbladder surgery to the nurse telling me to lie still while she put the truss on me after my hernia repair. Had I been able to I tried to sit up and said "hernia??? I was in for my gallbladder!" She said oh yes, yes...gallbladder but you ALSO had hernia repair. Sheesh, she really killed the buzz I was having from the pain meds.

Shall we play Can You Top This? I found blood on the back of a white skirt a few years ago -- eventually, after a sigmoidoscopy (ugh, no anaesthetic, ouch!) they found a polyp, so then a colonoscopy (with numbing, and I could watch) snaffled the thing. Biospsy said cancer, so surgery was organised, with another "flexibile siggy" (ouch) beforehand, when the surgeon said "Oh, there's nothing there!". I was watchng too, and thought I could remember where it had been, but couldn't see anything either. He said "Well, you're all prepped anyway, so we may as well do it," and chopped a bit out of the colon fairly near the exit. Fine, except that now there's a narrowing there and I can no longer have physical colonoscopies (too narrow for the camera) in case of another polyp, and have to have CT scans or barium Xrays, and if there IS a polyp, it can't be snipped off and I have to have the whole abdominal thing. So wish me no more polyps, please!
