What I don't understand is why didn't the rural area have a volunteer fire department? It's a complicated issue. The city can't afford to support a service for the rural area that doesn't pay taxes, which is a common thing. So there are volunteer fire depts in lots of small towns. Also the city said they sent both written reminders and called and spoke with the people to pay their bill. It's horrible and sad but fire departments are incredibly expensive to maintain.

jhb, my old friend is not in good shape. Our late hubbies worked together a long time ago. I hadn't seen her in about 20 years, although we kept in touch. A couple of years ago she had a stroke and now needs a walker and a wheel chair, and is quite frail. She came with her sister and another (much younger) friend whose late hubby also worked with ours, but I didn't know her before. She is a wonderful person, great personality, and knockout good looks -- the figure of a 25-year-old although she is 66. She was the "tour guide" and looked after my old friend so carefully.

From my tattered and torn Betty Crocker cookbook: 1 large egg, 1 cup white or wheat flour, 3/4 cup milk, 1 Tbl white or brown sugar, 2 Tbl vegetable oil, 3 tsp baking power, 1/4 tsp salt. Beat egg until fluffy. Beat in remaining ingredients. Pour slighly less than 1/4 cup batter onto greased griddle.

I don't measure for my crepes, just beat and egg with some milk add in flour until it's not lumpy and some veg oil and cook in butter in a tiny non-stick frying pan
