Hello Ruby - keep those chins up. Try and use as many french words as you have during your talks with staff at the hospital: I noticed when I was in France that the more you try, the more they will be unable to resist correcting you and so more contact established. Us English have bad reputation for talking down to anyone faintly foreign.
