Hi Haz, thanks for amazing clues. Just been on phone with daughter Jessica who had 2nd son Patrick on Wednesday. Sent home after 1 night to partner, 1st son, and 2 step-daughters with the message - if you go home today you will get 3 home visits from a midwife, if you stay for a 2nd night you get no home visits. I send out the overdue letters for my company. I find that if you suggest you are about to turn them over to collections, they are motivated to work out a payment plan. The ones who aren't are going to end up in collections anyway.

my hubby was made redundant after 18 years 2 years ago. we managed...just.our mortgage was paid and our bills in full but we really struggled, there are people alot worse than us(at first we had his redundancy money to help but you get no help from the government if you get so much!)

guess for a next warning, i can use the trick the receptionist at a place i used to work did... have 'typo' in the amount owed that we say we are sending to the collections agency--people call REALLY pissed when you put an extra digit in the total. She could almost always get a payment from them after apologizing for the error and promising to fix it!

when i first got bad i had hardly any money coming in and owed money, not rent as i got it payed but couldn't affors to feed myself bas the money i had left over weny on my cats! it was my choice to have them do i had to look after them. my best friend would buy extra food for me and i ws so embarressed and proud that i wouldn't accept it, but she would put it in my cupboards when i was out, so i know how hard it is!

i didn't get more animals, i already had 1 rescue cat and then my brother went to fight in iraq so i had his so i couldn't give them up as they'd had a crap life already, so my billes got paid, i contacted all the places i owed, as in credit card, gas/electric and paid so much every month, anfd i went without, not totally but really struggled, but we had a roof over our head and warmth!

I agree that we all approach this game differently. I feel like it gets bogged down when it's all about who finished first, who lists and when, and the whole "status" thing. And I have to laugh at those who won't list until they are half-way, and yet ask for the points status on certain words. Um...isn't that that same thing as looking at the list?

I love the term "word nerd". I find it fun to increase my vocabulary. But only with words that I may use on a regular basis. One of the reasons these grids bore me is that they are chock full of words that I will never use in writing or in conversation. I have no use for words like that.

Molly - I'm not a literary writer, or rather a writer of literature (see Martin Amies for total arrogant pr*ck) but I do think a love of language helps in writing. And, no, I won't use a big word when a small one will do. I want my readers to relax and enjoy whilst reading my stuff.

Oh Jac, don't get me wrong. I think a love of language helps in writing. But if it gets to the point where I come across as arrogant because I am using too many words that are "above" my audience, I will lose them. And that is not the point of why I write.

I was a bit shocked last year when I watched a programme on TV about Scrabble Championships. They all use weird and wonderful, and sometimes long words, but not many of them know what the words mean. They just see each formation of letters as a maths, as a score. That, to me, is unacceptable.

way back in the early 80's, I was working in ICU and a patient had an NG tube in (to keep her stomach empty ), and ET tube in (for breathing) a foley cath (for urine) and numerous central lines (IV's and an arterial line in to give her fluids and measureher heart and lung pressures. The Docs kept telling her family about these things; but the family had no clue about any of it and the Docs didn't "get" that. Finally the family asked me if all the tubes would get tangle up in her and tied in a knot

Molly - I totaly agree! I wasn't calling you arrogant, btw. I was commenting really on remarks I saw Martin Amies make about his hero from the novel 'Money'. He would not ever let that hero speak for himself, but always had to intervene through things thought. Why? Because, 'such an illiterate slob wold never know the words' and 'I will not demean myself to write as low as that, knowing to what leve I can write'. How's that for total arrogance?

I am calling Martin Amies arrogant, though! Also Sebastian Foulks, who made that programme about heroes in novels. He ended by saying that the last literary hero was Jim Dixon, from father of Martin, Kinglsey Amis' novel, 'Lucky Jim'. He then concluded, like it was FACT, that there would never ever be another literary hero. As far as he is concerned, the only hero in a book around now is in a children's book and that hero is Harry Potter. I won't tell you what I shouted at the TV because it's not fit for a family site.

I don't see why you can't work it both ways as a writer - you can use big words, or your knowledge of Latin etc., to make up new words. You can use your knowledge of history to make fun of history. People who choose to read books are not so stupid that they won't see what you're getting at with your simpler way of saying it. If they are that interested, they will look it up anyway.
