Over the next three months we ALL need to get our message across that, if approved in Mayâ€™s referendum, AV would spell the end of the first-past-the-post system of parliamentary voting, which offers the British public strong government and MPs who seek to represent all their constituents, rather than being party hacks.

Plenty of learned articles will be written both for and against AV. This quick guide is designed to give CLWCA Members and our supporters seven robust messages to get across while campaigning on the door steps and when talking to friends and family:

ONE â€“ AV undermines strong government especially when it is needed most (at times of crisis) by institutionalising politiciansâ€™ backroom deals, replacing the voice of the majority (or at least a large minority of the public) with a small unrepresentative minority.

This will mean our Party spending a lot of time and energy appealing to voters of smaller parties for their preference votes â€“ in short the risk is that extremists like Bob Crow in London or Nick Griffin nationwide will end up holding the Party and political process to ransom.

FOUR â€“ Only three countries use AV and in the largest of these, Australia, it is widely regarded as a complicated and expensive waste of taxpayersâ€™ money. Polls show most people in Australia want to drop AV as they did in New Zealand after their experiment with PR in the 1990s.

FIVE â€“ AV almost guarantees voters will become even more disillusioned with politics. Think of Nick Cleggâ€™s â€˜cast ironâ€™ pledge on student fees and his partyâ€™s subsequent U-turn. This would become the norm under AV for all politicians to say one thing to win your vote and then when elected do the exact opposite.

SIX â€“ AV risks governments falling and new ones being formed without a General Election to give you, the voters, a democratic say.

SEVEN â€“ AV could strengthen media â€˜mob ruleâ€™. Weak Government would â€˜followâ€™ the lowest common denominator whether on the status quo on Europe or attacking our free enterprise economic system.
