this has been a rough week here, my best friend's 86 yr old mom passed away suddenly on fri, no warning, she had been out tto lunch that day, and played bridge the day before. they are jewish, so we sat shiva until last night, i did all the organizing for meals etc, as they are not allowed to "work" while mourning. Then we got the call that DH's 89 yr old aunt passed in her sleep fri nite, she had had a stroke 2 mos. ago, and had bounced back with just a verrrrrry slight slur to her speech. The authorities were threatening the family with toxicology and autopsy. Son had to talk reason to them, so they just did tox, funeral will be on sat. in connecticut, hope we are not waiting for a third..

this is interesting...This is a fantastic chart, because it shows the speed at which our vocabulary really grows. Between the ages of 3 and roughly 16, our vocabulary explodes at an average rate of almost 4 new words a day (3.8, to be more exact). Then, between the ages of 16 and 50, our vocabulary growth is slower, but still fairly consistent: around 1 new word a day (0.85, to be precise). I find that a lot of the fiction I've read over the years hasn't been the usual or common fiction (which I do read ) but I've read a lot of 18th and 19th century fiction over time. that is what they tell you to do - don't check any word unless you really know the definition. I know they are trying to generate some stats, but their problem is that those who take the test score much higher than they know the average population to be, and this corresponds to a higher than average SAT score listed also. I suspect those with bad vocabularies do not take the test

I agree with crossy, though. It should be a test for readers. I once read the average book is written at a 6th grade reading level (ie: along the line of Readers' Digest); so unless you are reading something that is at a higher level that average; you won't come across a large number of these words. Try reading somethin by Thackeray or Wordsworth and Coleridge and that is at a whole'nother level of language than what we read today
