Alzheimers. dx about 3 years ago. Went from assisted living to a dementia home, Kemper House, this past summer. His decline was swift and peaceful. He never went through a combative stage, and never didn't know his immediate family. my son who is 20 made sure we were at dad's side every day this past week. He's an inspiring kid. As ends go in our culture, that sounds like about as good as it gets. Glad y'all were able to be there for him.
1:29 am
melonheadjujube
Here's what I wrote about him:
1:29 am
melonheadjujube
Joseph M. Savino could rightly claim the mantle of self-made man. The third child of Antonio and Carmela (Turtora) Savino, and the first to be born in the United States, he grew up in the Chicago suburb of Blue Island in a neighborhood populated by families from his parents' home town of Ripacandida in Italy's Basilicata province, and did not speak English until he entered the first grade. From these beginnings, he graduated high school with honors and went to work as a draftsman. Over some resistance from his widowed mother, he became the first in his family to attend college as a scholarship student at Purdue University, where he majored in mechanical engineering, obtaining his PhD. Upon completing his doctorate in 1955, he went to work at what is now NASA Glenn, starting in the field of fluid mechanics. Highlights of his thirty-five years at NASA as engineer and post-retirement years as a consultant included participation in the wind energy and technology transfer programs. He had a reputation for being a clear and readable technical writer. He was fond of telling people he got paid to have fun.
Joe defined for himself two life-changing events: discovering work he loved, and meeting the woman he married. Joseph and Marilyn (née Sadock) were the parents of six, whom they brought up in Berea, OH, choosing a college town as a desirable place to raise children. Together they enjoyed travel, bicycling, theater, and dancing. Joe was especially proud of his role in making Berea bike-friendly and developing a bike safety program for children. Joe had a special love of classical music, and while not a musician himself, he made sure his children had the opportunity to play. He frequently attended performances at the B-W Conservatory over the years.
Joseph Savino was born November 6, 1928 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. His last months were spent at Kemper House in Olmsted Falls where he was cared for in the final stages of Alzheimer's disease. He died on January 23, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn, daughter Rachel, granddaughter, Katy Dobbs, brother Hank, and sister Mary. He is survived by his children, daughters Juliana Sadock Savino, Teresa Savino (Roy), Mary Dobbs (Michael), sons Christopher, Michael (Beth), brothers Danny and Anthony (Annamaria) and eleven grandchildren, Jenni Frcho, Fred Cumberworth, Rosalie and Molly Carlson, Jeff and Charlie Dobbs, James and Avery Tishue, Constance and Maya Savino, and Sam Savino.
On a more personal note: my dad's highest compliment to me was "you would have been a really good engineer"—he really could not understand how, given the choice, anyone would want to be anything else—and yet it was his reverence for music that undoubtedly influenced me to take that up. When we were coming up he had a small but well chosen record collection, and I remember how he would balance an LP gingerly on his splayed fingertips and warn us neither to touch the needle nor "jump the record" by running around too much. Two records made me cry so much as a kid that he only played them at night, Vivaldi's Seasons and the Eröica Sym. The Eröica scared the hell out of me and I think I was well into my twenties before I listened to it in a live performance or voluntarily at all. It still does.
Oh, and he was—still is even in his slack-jawed throes—wicked handsome. He and my mom were a gorgeous couple.

haz, 14 days, 13 nights. if you want to see our ship, log into princess cruises. select dawn princess. there is a bridge cam which shows you where the ship is in real time.
2:46 am
Haz1558
Looking now. Not that I'm nosy or jealous or anything.
2:46 am

our last cruise was to vanatua and new caledonia. it was so much fun.

I like the idea of being able to visit lots of places without having to pack and unpack.
2:50 am
grannyrose
yup, that's a definite plus, haz
2:52 am
Haz1558
Over here there are lots of coach tours throughout Europe but the thought of having a different bed every night just doesn't appeal even though it's a great way of seeing lots of countries in a short space of time.
2:52 am
grannyrose
mind you...i'm glad i wasn't on that cruise ship in the mediterranean
2:53 am
Haz1558
It's been a terrible tragedy but so avoidable if the captain had only been sensible.
2:53 am
grannyrose
i'm with you, haz...but it seems to be the only way to see large bits of europe.
2:54 am
Haz1558
When I first heard the news 'a cruise ship has run aground off Italy' I just pictured a boat too far in - couldn't believe it when I saw it lying on its side.
2:55 am
grannyrose
almost ' titanic '. sort of...anyway. one doesn't think such a thing could happen in this day and age
2:56 am
Haz1558
It shouldn't have happened at all if the captain hadn't been so reckless. At least the death toll isn't as horrendous as it might have been but it's no thanks to him.
2:57 am
grannyrose
nearly 8pm here, and himself is circling like a shark...think he wants to be fed
2:57 am
Haz1558
I'd feed him, granny, you'll get no peace otherwise.
2:58 am

hello haz
3:28 am

I wonder if that captain is still in jail. He certainly should be.
3:29 am
Haz1558
The last I heard he was under house arrest.
3:29 am
rubyfoo
from what I've read, there weren't enough lifeboats, trained cew to man them or even lifeboat drills
3:30 am
Haz1558
Certainly the lifeboat drills have been questioned - I haven't heard that there weren't enough lifeboats but the problem was in launching them because the boat was at such a difficult angle.
3:31 am
rubyfoo
and waiters were "driving" them
3:33 am
Haz1558
Yes, but don't forget that on a ship that size, the number of people qualified to actually sail a boat would be tiny. There's a huge difference between a cruise ship that size and actually physically doing anything with a boat.
3:34 am
rubyfoo
many years ago, I took the France transat and there were as many crew as passengers and, they had trained crew members for each lifeboat
3:36 am
rubyfoo
but that was '67 and there weren't alll these enormous ships and so many passengers
3:36 am
Haz1558
I know - 4000 people aboard is amazing.
3:36 am
rubyfoo
I've lived in towns smaller than that!
3:38 am
Haz1558
There's not going to be much left of the ship by the time they finish. They were starting to use explosives to clear the way to try and recover more bodies.
3:39 am
rubyfoo
but what about the fuel? I haven't seen any updates on how they're going to get all that fuel off
3:39 am
rubyfoo
think about those waters.....
3:40 am
Haz1558
I don't know what they're going to do about that. It's probably a case of trying to get the bodies found without doing damage to the tanks.
3:41 am
rubyfoo
and can you imagine the amount of baggage and such that will be washing up on shore for years?
3:42 am
Haz1558
And the insurance claims..
3:42 am
rubyfoo
the whole thing is a nightmare and that wasn't exactly a pristine coast before all this
3:42 am
rubyfoo
we use generali, so I imagine even our rates will go up
3:45 am
Haz1558
It's been costly in terms of human life and material goods and all because of one man's stupidity.
3:46 am
rubyfoo
it's really too frightful to imagine. Fortunately, it's well-documented
3:49 am

12:56 pm
bamakitty1
hi everybody. How many words are there today? I've got 224 (with Lickety and my scrabble dictionary's help) but don't see any fireworks. Am i missing some?
12:57 pm
suz01
bbl.....have a webinar for work to do.
12:57 pm
Riverdance
224 words is it
12:57 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
bama, 224 is the number -- maybe when you typed one you mistyped and it didn't count?
12:59 pm
bamakitty1
it's telling me 224 words and 3105 points in the little box but I was hoping for some kind of "hey you're finished" something! Maybe cause my trial period ended and this is the second time I've ever finished one. Too much time on my hands today! LOL
1:00 pm
cybernan
re 7/36, please? does it build on the preceding 5?
1:00 pm
Riverdance
yes trial period is only 2 weeks - you need to become pro to see the fireworks display and the tile stats
1:00 pm
Glantarell
evening all
1:00 pm
Riverdance
its cheap enough and well worth it bama
1:00 pm
bamakitty1
also, what does nbt and nbs mean?
1:00 pm
Glantarell
re7 - re + what you burn logs in
1:00 pm
Riverdance
no blank tile and no blank stats
1:01 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
bama, that must be it, then. you will not regrent ponying up the cash to join 8-)
1:01 pm
Riverdance
meaning you have at least one word for each tile
1:01 pm
bamakitty1
what are blank tiles and stats? this may sound stupid but don't we all see 25 un-blank tiles?
1:02 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
oops, i mean regret
1:02 pm
cybernan
mm - I burn them in a fireplace!
1:02 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
when you have a tile that says 0 (as in, 0/1) then that tile is "blank"
1:02 pm
cybernan
oh -- the thing in the fireplace -- ty
1:02 pm
Glantarell
what is the thing in the fireplace which holds them off the ground?
1:02 pm
Riverdance
you see blank because you are not pro yet - we however see letters and numbers in them
1:03 pm
Glantarell
Nan- perhaps this is one of those things between US english and UK english - try gr5 - what happens when soembody gets on your nerves
1:03 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
right now my second tile shows "N 0/6" meaning there are six words that start from that N and so far I have found 0 of them
1:03 pm
bamakitty1
oh, ok. yep all i see are the values of the tiles. Thanks for clarifying!
1:04 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
(but then i'm working on the G right now)
1:05 pm
bamakitty1
oh now that would be helpful!! mine just says "1"
1:05 pm
Book Doctor Gwen
hmmmmm, i joined so long ago i forgot what things looked like to "newbies" 8-)
1:06 pm

westford
hello everyone too
5:44 pm
jillibus
Hi kje -- I'm waiting for Feb 2 when I see the surgeon and get x-rays. My 6 weeks of "no weight-bearing" was up last Saturday so I've been doing a little walking with the frame, very gingerly, and it doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Just one snag -- the wound on one side of the leg is taking a very long time to heal and is still quite open -- getting attention from home nurses twice a week.
5:44 pm
gramma
5:36, I asked for a clue. Help please.
5:44 pm
crosshair
i have a semi-precious stone often ground up for emery boards ga 7/36

5:46 pm

5:46 pm
westford
hi molly
5:46 pm
jillibus
ty kje -- and crossy, that stone is my late mother's birthstone and I have some nice jewellery.
5:46 pm
kje
I had to ask for PT after my ankle fracture as the surgeon said I'd be fine without, but I loved them, and have the great results to show they helped
5:47 pm
gramma
6 left and I have to run to the neighbors. Go ahead and finish this for me. Oh wait! you can't. In that case, I'll be back later.
5:47 pm
kje
that is my birthstone too
5:47 pm
westford
my mother finally came home today..still not home officially though nurse inspector will be there tomorrow to see how she did overnight..
5:48 pm
Good Enough
that gramma moves fast...
5:48 pm
jillibus
kje -- I'm not walking much but have been doing pt exercises all along in preparation. Still in the wheelchair most of the time. Foot still swells a lot in the evening -- I have it propped up when I'm on the computer, like now!
5:48 pm
MollyL
Good news West. Hope all goes well with the nurse inspector.
5:48 pm

jillibus
I do have a Jobs hose -- don't know if it's a strong one. But pressure on the sore is painful.
5:51 pm
kje
so sorry - jilli - it will get better!
5:51 pm
westford
I read that as something you use to water the garden
5:51 pm
jillibus

I heard about that - so exciting! I am jealous!
5:53 pm
jillibus
A year from now I will NOT be running a marathon, guaranteed!
5:53 pm
kje
OK, but that was likely true even if you hadn't broken the ankle - lol
5:56 pm
jillibus
kje -- that icon of yours is fabulous.

5:59 pm

6:07 pm
westford
are the meals microwave ready?
6:08 pm
jillibus
west, I haven't tried cooking -- it does require standing up and that's hard to do on one leg for any length of time. Warming things in the microwave doesn't rank as cooking imho, lol!
6:08 pm
westford
wow crossy lol
6:08 pm
jillibus
hiw's your weight doing, crossy?
6:09 pm
westford
right jilli..and since mine is mounted above the stove I'd have a hard time with that
6:09 pm
MollyL
I would say three pounds of cheese in a pan of lasagne is excessive, and I am a cheese lover.
6:10 pm
westford
oh but nothing better than leftover lasagna
6:10 pm
crosshair
still 40 pound over but colesterol is 96!! bring it on!

6:10 pm
westford
you're making extra crossy?
6:11 pm
jillibus
west, the meals come in aluminum trays, unfortunately. They are really ample, so the home support helper divides them onto two plates. My microwave is also usually on a raised shelf but my wonderful neighbours took it down and put it on the counter so I can reach it.
6:11 pm

6:12 pm

6:24 pm
dofith
Ooh, yes please, west - ice sounds nice! I think it will be a record-breaking heatwave which is saying something for this place. We're meant to have the best climate in the world (Mediterranean) - well, they can keep it - I HATE it!!And so dry. Poor garden will just crisp up.
6:25 pm

6:27 pm

6:27 pm
dofith
Herin, I'd do it tomorrow!Especially as I am a "gardener". But my hubby is a Melbourne boy - came here for Uni and LOVED it (and me, of course!) - hates Melb weather. All my men (hubby and 4 sons) love the sun
6:28 pm
crosshair

6:28 pm
herinfernallady
Aww
6:28 pm
jillibus
cousins are on Through Rd in Camberwell -- do you know the area, herin?
6:28 pm

At leastwe havesome air con in this room, now - second summer with it - has changed my life. I think New Zealand would be the perfect placetolive - Nth island
6:29 pm

cosdem
i have it all saved up on my dvr.. im gonna record it all to a dvd so i dont have to buy the box set when it comes out :)
6:33 pm
herinfernallady
Hulu is stupid and not available in Aus. That said they complain about piracy yet shows are not shared outside of the USA on legit sights
6:33 pm
MollyL
Is what still around?
6:34 pm
westford

6:34 pm
westford
dof that is crossy's last name

westford
I thought I heard they were doing away with it
6:35 pm
westford
glad I thought wrong
6:36 pm
jillibus
I though crossy's last name was Smith
6:36 pm
MollyL
Not sure why Hulu is exclusive to the US. I know that certain sites are exclusive to certain countries. I had trouble accessing Australian tv sites when I was following something once.
6:37 pm
westford
help with my last h please I have 5 ha and 2 hi..what am I missing please
6:37 pm
herinfernallady
Because the USA would rather have a mental over illegal downloads than actually having a legal option
6:37 pm
westford
you got that right herin
6:37 pm
herinfernallady
The fbi just shut down a website suspected of piracy. even though it has legitimate uses.
6:38 pm
cosdem

6:44 pm
jillibus
who's the he you're wondering about, west?
6:44 pm
herinfernallady
Well still like to know what I said to be offensive. That said no wonder I don't bother talking here anymore considering that was a non political / offensive comment about piracy

nor i herin
6:47 pm
crosshair
i think the copyright laws must change and the way we sell/ship and transmit media
6:47 pm
herinfernallady
Considering this one site that got shut down by the FBI is a file sharing website with legit uses like sharing a personal folio with others.
6:47 pm
crosshair
we are on a brave new frontier with the computer and we must change/adapt
6:47 pm
herinfernallady
To me I have to quote someone in the paper as saying
6:48 pm
crosshair
much of what is available in the states (hulu) is blocked to us
6:48 pm
herinfernallady
'it is like banning mobile phones because terrorist use them.
6:48 pm
crosshair
indeed herin
6:48 pm
westford

6:50 pm
westford
I think it's a man thing jilli ..husband and son are the same way
6:50 pm
herinfernallady
The other thing as well is when Australia is on Parity with the USA we still get screwed in video games and online content so I can honestly see why people do what they do even though it isn't right.
6:50 pm
jillibus
I've been told to wait for iPad3
6:51 pm
crosshair
we get screwed as well herin
6:51 pm

7:02 pm
crosshair
we can get google books now herin
7:02 pm
