Molly - my hot whiskey has a slice of lemon rather than lemon juice. If you don't have afresh lemon just a tincture of juice. Ideally the boiling water should be poured into the glass which already has the other ingredients. The shock of the hot water improves the infusion compared with adding the lemon cloves and sugar later. Anyway don't let us get onto drinks again as I may develop a thirst!
