Worth looking into, for sure. Last year, I decided that Grant needed "out" of the math class where he was languishing (he's naturally gifted in math, but was earning only a C, even on tests). We enrolled him in an online public school for math for the rest of the year and that ended up working pretty well. He stayed in his other classes. There are so many things I would do differently though, if I had known ahead of time...

in washington state, we have an online database through the superintendent of public instruction. It tells how students "do" on the high stakes tests in various grades over time as well as graduation rates, poverty rates in schools (by a free and reduced lunch count) and also can tell how many of the teachers are highly qualified.

Hanging out sounds nice! I had lunch with a couple friends today, and it was so much fun. Can't afford to do that often, but it was so worth it. Next time, maybe I'll suggest we visit at home and I can bake something nice. My friend and I are both on restricted diets, when I combine the few things we can both eat, it makes for a sensible but tasty treat.

I think both my grandfathers struggled with it a bit, and some of the extended family. I have heard stories. Tom and I have tried to make wine and occasional alcohol part of our children's growing up (we had occasional wine with supper or things like egg nog and let them sip at it) so there isn't any mystery, neither one really likes the taste so I think we might be on the right track.

Last night Grant's school band had their first concert of the season. Down to two tubas, and they sounded FINE! The senior player got the new tuba with the paddle valves, but Grant got the other fairly nice one. They had some really difficult passages, too. Love it when they play so well. The first orchestra concert of the year for him is Sunday, too.

The only restriction is that you can only redeem your seats starting monday the week of the concerts, but you can redeem as many or as few as you like for a concert. So, instead of seeing them twice last year, I saw them SEVEN times. (:

To anyone who complains about ticket prices, I point out that for the price of a ballgame, you see 100 people onstage, the top of their profession, and the never choke!

I just love tubas. I know so much more about the orchestra and band instruments now, thanks to my boys' participation I can even pick out different instruments and parts now! :-) I used to hear only the parts that were in my vocal range.

Exactly, stid. In most high schools, instrumentalists are "overrepresented" in calculus and AP courses. The thing about the arts is, you can't do it for the grade, by nature a kid who loves music doesn't want to just get by, they want to get good, really good at it, an ethic that will follow them. And, yes, band nerds are cool!
