I agree, rose, they can be. I had a similar experience with my youngest son when he was about 16/17. Things improved a lot, but to this day (he is 29) he still tends to withdraw from the family.

I had the fire department call me once in the middle of the night (I was on shift) to say they had an alarm and was there a fire; I asked where the alarm was coming from and they said under the floor. I said "get over here!!" No way was I telling them there wasn't any fire under the floor.
