granny rose, i have been eavesdropping on your conversation with 'Mr Gummidge'. I am a genealogy nut and can only advise you to ask your questions now before your folk are gone. It is so frustrating when you hit a brick wall and can't ask the relevant questions. Then either record it on paper or electronically for the next generation and beyond. They too will not ask questions at thr right time. As for names being repeated there was a code for naming children after close relatives so there were lots of the same names, very frustrating for those of us trying to research.

Turtles can breathe through their butts! It's what is called "cloacal breathing". This is when the turtle draws water in through it's cloaca (i.e it's butt - the vent in its tail through which waste passes and that is also used as the reproductive passage). Gas exchange takes place and oxygen in the water is extracted and absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the lining the cloaca, instead of through the usual lung route, and this process allows the turtle to stay under water for longer than it could do otherwise. :)
