am in tears here. 5 years ago i lost my dearest friend to breast cancer. i'm watching a program in which a young woman is trying to decide whether or not to have a bilateral mastectomy. her grandmother and mother have both had breast cancer. the hard part for me, my friend sat in my loungeroom and wept because she didn't want the second course of chemotherapy...and i didn't have the guts to say to her, for goodness sake woman, have it.

Everyone has to make their own choices and chemo doesn't always work. Also, it is quite debilitating. I had two relatives where it was the chemo not the cancer that killed them. You just never know.

Rose, don't feel guilty. Your friend made her own decision. Had you told her to go for the chemo, her quality of life would have been impaired and the outcome might well have been the same. There are a lot of ifs and buts there and only the person suffering knows whether they can tolerate any further pain. You listened and I am sure that was more comfort to her.
