It's still a mess because the Medicaid (poor people help) is run by the states, so the expansion of that, even though the federal gov't was going to pay for most of it, some states have refused, so things haven't improved for the poor in those places.

But they can't. Right now they are working on making sure that if you have a concealed gun permit from one state it is valid in every other state, even if your state has virtually no restrictions and the other state has lots.

It's an interesting concept MLF ! We have similar establishments in Alberta, but more in a bar/lounge setting where the patrons can do oil paintings. Two of my daughters have had fun doing that!

There is only a limit to how much you can earn if you take EARLY retirement (before, for me, age 66). You still get your retirement check if you go over that amount....they just reduce the amount accordingly. After 66 there are no limits.

Public service announcement for US Babblers who haven't yet taken social security: The consequences for deciding when to claim make a huge difference to your financial quality of life. It turns out that most Americans claim as soon as possible (age 62) rather than wait for 'full' retirement age (for most baby boomer Babblers, that's 66) or even waiting till 70. (No advantage in waiting after you turn 70, the benefits are capped as of that age.) Benefits are determined by your age at claiming and gender, and are indexed so that if you live to your statistical average age, you should collect the same amount whether you claim early or late. Last comments (I promise!) If you really need the money when you hit 62, then it makes sense to claim early, even knowing that you will earn less monthly forever. But if you are working, or have a partner still working, you might well postpose so that when you are non-working you will have greater fixed monthly benefit. And there are special rules that may make claiming off a former or current spouse's benefits more valuable than claiming off your own earning record.

OK I lied--one more thing. Many more elderly women live in poverty than elderly men, since we usually earned less and live longer. So it's really important to figure out the rules and maximize your SS benefits. If you can't figure it out yourself--and it's complicated to make the right choice--there are websites that explain it all. The important thing is--once you make a choice, you're stuck with it or life, so it's worth making the choice that you know will be right for you.

I'm not sure revolution is much of an answer in the modern world, look at the disaster of the Arab Spring. And I'm not even sure that government is really the driving engine now, in a globalized economy. Governments seem powerless to implement even minor assistances like training programs, a living wage, etc. It's hard to see what can be done to reverse the trend of a fabulously wealthy tiny top of the pyramid and the rest of us with wages driven down to subsistence levels.
