i am just putting this out there. if any doctor offers to inject a damaged nerve for you, either smile sweetly and say, you have to knock me out first...or pick up the nearest chair and hit them over the head with it.

considering we didn't even receive a christmas card from her. i guess we should be grateful for small miracles.
3:29 am

absolutely. And probably just kick out any expectations you still had about her... they will only lead to disappointments. Don't expect anything, then a way too late, begrudged phonecall will surprise you pleasantly, lol

he is the answer to our prayers, darling. Am so grateful the Big Guy made sure you were in the best hands possible. And here is a long and warm *hug* for you... I am holding you... just let it be what it is right now.

Burt is having his surgery onWed and will be in hospital 'til Friday
3:40 am
grannyrose
poor you ruby
3:41 am
rubyfoo
Selfishly, it will be good to have a coue of days without running up and down the steps with his food, but now I'm looking for a nurse to come in the afternoons during his recovery, basically to walk him around. There is no way I can do it
3:42 am
sprite
sorry it came back, but so glad you had a day to recover a litlle. Will be nice for you to have Burt out of your hair for a few days, I think.
3:42 am
sprite
yeah, a nurse is absolutely necessary
3:43 am
grannyrose
ruby, any chance you can sit back a relax a bit, with burt out of the house?
3:43 am
rubyfoo
The surprise was tat the hernia (s) are uch bigger than I realized and that he needs general anesthesia. The whole thing is risk at his age, but all he does is moan and it's making me crazy
3:44 am
sprite
yeah, pretty risky, but the alternative is worse.
3:44 am
rubyfoo
Sprite, ty for jigidi, my favorites, o far, are the chows (of course) and the pinwheels. It is helping to keep me from going off the rails
3:45 am
rubyfoo
Burt's daughter is too busy to come here to help
3:46 am
sprite
am ever so glad, ruby. Let me know if you have another theme that you would like a puzzle from.
3:46 am

I actually made one myself of Ruby's watercolor portrait
3:46 am

oh lovely. Did you publish it?
3:47 am
rubyfoo
I'm not sure and don't know how to find it now
3:47 am
rubyfoo
I'm sure it's too easy for you, but it's very pretty
3:48 am
grannyrose
sprite, i did my ballet jigsaw. it was terrific. and would you believe?? don came home from the market stall with a jigsaw for me. a degas pic of ballet dancers. what a coincidence.!
3:48 am

3:49 am
sprite
omg rose, that is so funny! Quite a coincidence indeed. Am glad you enjoyed your puzzle. I very much enjoyed creating it. Isn't the pink tutu child adorable?
3:49 am
rubyfoo
I'm too achy to sit up now, but I wanted to say "hello" and thank you to you two dear friends
3:49 am

Small grid but finicky
6:12 am
bojazz
t-b-d = to be determined. ok, dawg, 'fess up! what are you???
6:14 am
lbdawger
hi bojazz...??? what am I
6:15 am
bojazz
sukee address you as tbd - just curios (or with not much else to do - puzzle tooooo small)
6:16 am
bojazz
of course you have the right to remain silent and if you do not have one, an attorney will be appointed for you, blah, blah, blah
6:16 am
lbdawger
yeah, tiny finicky grid.
6:17 am
bojazz
it's Sat for gosh sake - a time consuming challenge is needed today!!!
6:18 am
lbdawger
well, a bit bigger would have been appreciated like around 175 - 200.
6:19 am
bojazz
excellent size - agree
6:19 am
sukee
5 left, time for breakfast.
6:19 am
bojazz
ooops, sorry
6:20 am
MollyL
tbd...lbd takes on an air of mystery
6:21 am
bojazz
good icon, Molly
6:22 am
MollyL
I don't know. It's 9 degrees and we turn the clocks ahead tonight. There is something inherently wrong with that.
6:23 am
bojazz
agree on that - leave the time as the time it should be all the time! :)
6:24 am
bojazz
but it's the government - what else should we expect? logical, reasonable thinking? NOT
6:25 am
lbdawger
I agree, Bo. daylight savings is a waste of time.
6:27 am
lbdawger
well, it worked when farmers and ranchers were our backbone of economic trade, and they needed to use as much daylight as possible. obviously no longer true or needed.
6:28 am
dan2bit
agree it's the switching that is stupid. But I prefer evening daylight so would vote to stay on DST
6:28 am
dan2bit
morning all!
6:28 am
bojazz
understand origin - trouble is once government starts something - right or wrong - there ain't no going back
6:29 am
bojazz
my argument would be JUST stay, dan - daylight, nightlite, moonlight, whatever...
6:29 am
josephjames
Actually I think they did get rid of it once, after the first time they introduced it, but then they brought it back. If I am remembering right.
6:30 am
dan2bit
woo hoo top two rows done :-)
6:30 am
bojazz
see? got way to much time on my hands this a.m. - no more rants. the government is good...
6:31 am
MollyL
Daylight Savings Time is not a waste of time. It is a welcome relief to people with Seasonal Affective Disorder.
6:31 am
josephjames
I think that's going a bit too far, bojazz...
6:32 am
bojazz
SAD? really?
6:32 am
MollyL
You've never heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder?
6:33 am
bojazz
just a few seconds ago...
6:35 am
bojazz
OK - it is real. I can understand how it would happen...
6:35 am
MollyL
Lack of daylight affects peoples moods. For some people, it's a serious problem and can lead to, or increase already present depression.
6:35 am
josephjames
From what I've read it's not clear that DST has any clear effect on SAD - it is a shorter period of light in the winter no matter what you do.
6:36 am
MollyL
Okay, I'll leave this conversation to the experts then.
6:37 am
josephjames
I do know that Hawaii touts their non-usage of DST as one of the benefits of living there.
6:38 am
lbdawger
Arizona also doesn't change.
6:38 am
josephjames
and they have more need for touting reasons to live there...
6:42 am
bojazz
think I'd like Arizona, then
6:44 am
dan2bit
you're in good company, bojazz. A 2010 US phone survey put the number of Americans who don’t think the time change is worth the hassle at 47%
6:44 am
josephjames
when did they take the survey
6:44 am
dan2bit
not sure if the survey question was a leading one, because I'm not paying to subscribe to Rassmussen Reports, tyvm
6:45 am
bojazz
it's always comforting to be in good company...
6:45 am
josephjames
If it was in the spring, I bet you'd get a higher percent of dissatisfaction than if it was in the fall.
6:45 am
bojazz
hanging out on Babble is being in good company, IMO
6:47 am
dan2bit
jj - I'd also bet that where you are longitudinally within your time zone makes a difference.
6:47 am
josephjames
could be, could be
6:48 am
bojazz
good word, dan - that should be in a spelling bee. I'd never get it for sure
6:48 am
josephjames
hey look at that - gold, frankincense, and ...
6:49 am
Anniebrook
thanks, jj
6:49 am
dan2bit
it wil make getting miss2bit up for church tomorrow a hassle, that's clear
6:49 am
bojazz
yeah, it can mess-up the young 'uns
6:51 am
lbdawger
it messes up us old 'uns too
6:52 am
dan2bit
wrong box Gitel
6:52 am
bojazz
wrong box, Gitel
6:58 am
MollyL
2Bit, you are already having problems getting the child up in the morning? God help you when she's a teenager.
6:59 am
dan2bit
generally she has no trouble bouncing out after ~11 hours or so. It's just unlikely that she'll go to bed an hour early tonight just because we want her to :-)
7:00 am
dan2bit
teen years are another story of course. I suspect she'll align much better with her mother the night owl then
7:01 am
dan2bit
stats for the bottom row E, please?
7:01 am
Anniebrook
em 4/5
7:02 am
Anniebrook
nope, wrong clue, eq 6/27
7:02 am

7:02 am
Gitel
Apologies for earlier. Was being transported to x-rays and must have jiggled the box!
7:03 am
bojazz
hope it's all good, Gitel
7:04 am
Gitel
Happened again. Sorry
7:04 am
bojazz
we noticed :)
7:05 am
Anniebrook
Gitel, put a consonant in front of the word...
7:05 am
lbdawger
welp, I've finished guess I'll go get brekkies. have a great day everyone.
7:05 am
Anniebrook
congrats, dawg!!!
7:07 am
Anniebrook
Hi scrabbs, yes, 53 and I am done. Getting ready to go to the dentist. Ugh!
7:10 am
crosshair
Good morning, everyone:)
7:10 am
Scrabbler
G'day, Sir Crosshair!
7:12 am
crosshair
How is scrabby this fine, mild morning?
7:12 am
Scrabbler
I still have a mild migraine which started yesterday afternoon, but it is snowing and I will XC-ski today and tomorrow!
7:13 am
Scrabbler
We snowshoed yesterday because of the crunchy snow caused by Tuesday's freezing rain.
7:13 am
crosshair
It is minus 5c and good for everything outdoors:)
7:14 am
crosshair
We got a pass on the freezing rain and instead got a few more inches of fresh powder
7:14 am
Scrabbler
Starting tomorrow we will be above freezing for many days. That put me into a panic when I looked at the forecast a few days ago.
7:17 am
crosshair
Our ski resorts pre-purchases electricity in "blocks of KW usage" at a set fee. Now they will run the snow guns until the end of March break to make the base as deep as they possibly can and go into snow storage/management mode and just let people use it till it runs out (usually the end of April depending on weather)
7:18 am
crosshair
There is, however, tons of natural stuff in the bush, and that is where crossy goes to play:)
7:18 am
Scrabbler
The ski resort across the valley here usually closes around mid-March, but, with a base of at least 2 feet, they may stay open longer. The other resort 30 miles south typically stays open into early April if they can.
7:18 am
Scrabbler
Yes, snowshoeing in the woods sure is fun.
7:19 am
crosshair
I just went to our ski site and Blue has a 5 foot base today
7:22 am
crosshair
It will keep our city visitors happy and out of my way in the woods
7:22 am
Scrabbler
Spring skiing and snowshoeing is fun--wearing a T-shirt and jeans.
7:23 am
welki
'morning, folks
7:23 am
crosshair
I know! I over-dressed yesterday, and when I took my ski shell off it was dripping wet on the inside. It did, however, do its job and keep all that moisture away from me:)
7:24 am
crosshair
Howdy, welki
7:24 am
Scrabbler
Hi welki
7:25 am
Scrabbler
I am always soaked.
7:26 am
crosshair
my fleece pull-over and my ski shell are my dynamic duo:)
7:27 am
crosshair
not to mention a pair of those form-fitting thermal undies for deep cold
7:27 am
Scrabbler
Yes, I just change up the layers depending on the temp.
7:27 am
crosshair
They have really come down in price. They used to cost a fortune!
7:28 am
Scrabbler
Do you have the merino wool ones? I do not and looked at some recently--more than I want to spend.
7:29 am
crosshair
Sec , I will check the brand. i buy them here at Marks Work Warehouse...
7:30 am
Scrabbler
I will look with you, leona.
7:31 am
crosshair
they are Wind River "t-max" polyester set
7:31 am

7:32 am
Sugrraleona

7:32 am
Scrabbler
I have the moisture-wicking base layers, but someone told me to get the merino wool ones. The shirt is $50+ and bottoms $80+.
7:32 am
Scrabbler
TY, teach
7:32 am
Sugrraleona
LOL - I'm married to a ga6 - baaahaaahaaa
7:32 am
crosshair
I have no experience with the merino wool ones. I may have to give them a go next winter
7:33 am
crosshair
ouch! they have merino sets, but it is it is almost 100 dollars apiece for the top and bottom!
7:34 am
Scrabbler
Poor, leona!
7:34 am
Scrabbler
And poor Leona too.
7:35 am
Scrabbler
My layers work for me, Crossy.
7:35 am
crosshair
Yes, i think i will stick with my tried and true layer combos
7:36 am
MollyL
Leona, if you are going to be married to more than one, make sure they are not flatulent
: D
7:36 am
Aloyisius
oh my, a little one today.. hi everyone
7:36 am
Scrabbler
Hi Aloy
7:37 am
Aloyisius
hi Scrabbs the winter lover!
7:38 am
phaeton
hello...any one have the fe7?
7:38 am
Aloyisius
you must be in great shape, Scrabbler for all the exercise you get outside.. I think that is the best way to enjoy the cold weather.. rosy cheeks and healthy activity
7:39 am
crosshair
My outer shell is a nice one from North Face. It was given to me after I volunteered at the 1997 special Olympic winter games here on Blue Mountain. It is a lovely commemorative shell, and as well put together today as when it was new. I did not have any glorious position, but instead kept people in bounds and moved hay bales and ropes around:)
7:40 am
dan2bit
clue for the se6?
7:40 am
crosshair
I bet our scrabby has buns of steel:)))
7:41 am
Scrabbler
Aloy, I remain fat but mostly fit--muscular legs, great endurance, but I have not lost any weight this winter. The eternal battle.
7:42 am
Scrabbler
I have an old LL Bean shell--pull on over the head, front pouch.
7:42 am
Scrabbler
Dan, I tried and gave up on that one.
7:43 am
MollyL
Soarkly thing on fabric, 2Bit
7:43 am
Aloyisius
on the other hand, strength, flexibility, stamina, bone density.. you are building all those things that tend to diminish as we get older.. great investment in the future.. and you are NOT "fat"
7:44 am
MollyL
Or sparkly
7:44 am
dan2bit
ty Molly and all cluers - that's firewords!
7:44 am
crosshair
yaa for dan!!!
7:45 am
MollyL
2Bit, you genius. How you solved such a long, difficult grid so quickly is beyond me
7:45 am
Aloyisius
congrats, dan2 !
7:46 am
Scrabbler
Move it or lose it, Aloy. When people become inactive in their 50's and later the ballgame is over
7:47 am
Aloyisius
think I'll put your words on my mirror, Scrabs.. to remind me each day I feel like a slug.. (-:
7:47 am
dan2bit
Molly I like to celebrate my small accomplishments :-)
7:48 am
MollyL
Baby steps, 2Bit...baby steps : D
7:53 am

8:32 am

Hiya babblers
8:38 am
crosshair
and now it is time for crossy's tidbit of the day!
8:38 am
crosshair
When immigrants to Canada officially become citizens, they are given a free one-year pass to thousands of museums and cultural centers across Canada. The ticket helps Canada's newest citizens to discover the vast cultural history, artworks and parks of the country.
8:39 am
crosshair
Nice to do a little self-promoting once in a while:)
8:39 am
pippingeek
That is fantastic
8:41 am
crosshair
Keeping in mind that tickets to many of these centres start at a 10 dollar "donation" the value of a free year pass becomes quite apparant.

is that something new, crossy?

I do not know when the policy was established, welki
9:08 am
crosshair
started in 2007 and is officially know as the Cultural Access Pass
9:08 am
welki
aha - looked it up. seems like it's a new initiative, started around 2010
9:12 am
crosshair
I was lucky. I came is under the old Landed immigrant set-up which gives me a status as a permanent resident. This way i have the best of both worlds and I keep my U.K Passport.
9:12 am
welki
our local science centre charges $15/adult and $11/child admission - that cultural pass would help out a lot, but what about the taxpayers who paid for the centre? no break for them - and if a couple has two kids, that's more than $50 to walk through the door - much more than an average family can afford (same for museums and the zoo here - cost prohibitive to working class families)
9:12 am
welki
i have my dual citizenship
9:13 am
crosshair
Well, as a tax payer. it does not bother me in the slightest to do my bit to help new citizens enjoy all this country has to offer.
9:14 am
crosshair
Many who come here have never been able to enjoy museums and cultural centres, while I have had them at my fingetips for decades.
9:14 am
welki
not saying otherwise, just that it'd be nice if citizens were offered some incentives to participate in the cultural scene, too
9:15 am
welki
(at least here, in alberta - don't know what it's like in other provinces)
9:15 am
crosshair
yes, a break on admission would be nice, but until them a visit is a treat and not a weekly thing:)
9:16 am
welki
given a free or discounted pass, there's bound to be abuse of the privilege - human nature
9:17 am
crosshair
There are many free ones though, if you dig a bit. We have county museums and archives hidden off the beaten path as well as open donation township museums run out of old schoolhouses.
9:17 am
crosshair
Not to mention our own town museum filled with local relics of our past
9:18 am
welki
sure, i get that - but the 'pay for admission' venues are what people would like to see - a major art exhibit, the dinosaur fossils, etc.
9:18 am
crosshair
ahh, yeas, the bit ticket places like our royal ontario Museum.
9:19 am
crosshair
I must say i do not care for the design of the new addition they put on the place:(
9:19 am
welki
i was really caught off guard the first time i went to the glenbow museum and there was an admission fee. i was used to the museums in nyc that are admission by donation - everyone gets to visit (and yes, it's by honor system - and i'm sure that for the most part, people are honorable and donate what they can afford)
9:20 am
welki
at the time, i was new to canada and had very little money - and a passel of kids in tow
9:21 am

Lots of free things to visit in DC, including The National Zoo and many of the art galleries and museums. Which makes it nice for the people who have spent money traveling there to visit.
10:05 am

we have a nice art museum in my town....supported by the Wyeths, whose summer houses are in this area....what's nice is that residents of my town can go for free anytime....not bad for a town of 7600...

Good Morning Everyone. I'd like to chime in on the museum fees for visits. I've found that if you check around on the museums' online sites, you may find that there may be a day once a month or once a week that has a free entry day.
10:21 am
MollyL
Well I guess it's good to get excited over 4 letter words
10:22 am

Or reduced fees; for the public. And if you join 1 museum, you can get discounted tickets to numerous museums across the country.
10:22 am

very true, nef....we have that here...
10:22 am
MollyL
I've heard that about US museums Nef. Not sure about the Canadian ones that were being discussed. Having grown up around DC, I can't imagine paying to get into a museum. I am fortunate in that respect.
10:27 am
Nef
It's been so long since I've been to Canada that my kids have grown up since back then! But I remember we went to a couple of museums near Kenora and Thunder Bay (Manitoba) and it didn't seem very expensive back then (& we always watched our pennies back then)

Chicago's Museum of Science& Industry charges $18. adults & $11. for children but also $36 for special displays. So for a family of 4 quite expensive. Few years ago I went to the Aquarium and for (4) it cost me around $75.00

I think admission vs. no admission has to do with Federally funded museums vs. privately funded.

I belong to the Science Museum of MN and they have a special exhibit there right now on Space. I took DH and our grandson there last weekend, and we also saw the movie in the Omni theater (also on Space).
With our senior discounts and membership we paid about half of what a non-member would pay.

You could spend a week or two visiting Art Museums and History Museums in DC. It's pretty cool to go to The National Archives and see the original copy of The Constitution.

One of our favorite museums in DC was the Goddard Space Flight Center, but it could have been because it wasn't jammed packed with people (like the Smithsonian was that week).

We've had some very interesting museum vivts in odd places in our travels in the US. theres' a museum in Rock Springs, WY. that has a Foucaut pendulum, but they also have a huge display of dinosaurs, etc. And we crawled under an inflatable planetarium in Peirre, SD. Years ago. (The planetary guide was a 10 or 12 year old kid: it was really quite good if a bit strange. I suppose it's gone now…)

Molly, the one in NYC has far more than the one in DC. And I have found lots of dirt in DC
11:21 am

There are three reasons why I like DC better than New York. DC is a beautiful city, DC doesn't smell like pee and you can see the sky in DC. : D

3:35 pm

that's true. The parks up here have that problem. The council spend a lot of money making them look nice only for the little gits to pull the plants out and throw them around the park. If it's not that then they go round smashing empty bottles everywhere. Still, musn't grumble - like you say, spring's on it's way! Along with my birthday (grooooaaaan!!!!)
