I don't understand the lent thing either and I am well aware of the practice of "giving something up for lent". I don't believe that a just and loving God has any interest in people "sacrificing: in order to impress him.

it can be about focusing your mind onto what really matters, it can be about participating in some small way in the sacrifices that Jesus made (kind of like how in the 30-hour famine fundraisers, part of the point is to have a slight idea of what it is like for people who are going hungry)

if you have any admiration for those who sign up to be soldiers, even when you disagree with the wars they are fighting, then you understand essentially how sacrificing can be seen as a good in some way. you're just having trouble applying it to another realm. but you are capable of associating it with justice and love. if you are like house and think people who become soldiers are stupid and suckers, then, i guess that would be it then. :)

The whole Puritan ethic of "we must suffer because Jesus did" doesn't seem right to me. If you believe in the whole "why Jesus suffered and died the way he did" thing...it was because he was saving us from having to suffer in the same way. Why negate that by being penitent?
