It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. Our beloved Renny has passed away. She and the "cool man", her husband, their two cats and their dog have perished in a fire at their house. This happened Saturday night, November 7. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I'd like to think it would have by now, but there are a number of factors that are causing me distress: 1) closed 2 half-time positions to roll into 1; 2) the third half-time position was going to absorb some of the duties of those that closed; 3) he resigned; 4) a grad student was "assigned" to me who's never been in OR before so has no ability to provide adequate support; 5) I'm supposed to train her through repetition (how to "manage" a bulletin board); 6) 2 faculty members have decided that I'm--not sure exactly what--rude, condescending, arrogant, beligerent (not sure which they actually used) and have decided to take me to HR; 7) our beloved senior professor passed away from a long bout of leukemia on Thursday evening; 8) I hear the sad Babble news today; 9) and today's my birthday... it's been tough. :-(

I am sad, pini, and in the middle of conference week, but otherwise our family is well. AND in the hope of seeing inlaws for a little while this weekend we had cleaned up the house... they stayed 15 minutes and never sat down. :-( LOL typical, I am afraid.

I am very much the same way, origami! Too independent. About the only time I go to a doc is for vaccinations (which I still need to do) and if I think I broke something, since x-rays are about the only thing I cannot do at home.

I will blow. I just hate the doctor. I had typhoid (actual typhoid) as a child, was in the hospital for quite a while and never got over being creeped out by seeing doctors.

Apparently we saw it in a drive-in when I was under 4. I didn't remember the movie, but the scene with the Banshee stuck with me and recurred a LOT. Saw it on TV when I was in my mid-20s and when that scene appeared, I was shocked. Told Mother about it and she said she thought I slept through the whole movie... LOL

It's weird the stuff that sticks with us. I should be thankful to those creepily clad MDs. I was at death's door and they didn't know what was wrong with me. Until one of them who had just gotten back from Peace Corps service said that I looked like I had typhoid. They didn't even test for it in 1962 California.

I remember the Naval Hospital not being able to deal with my oldest dau's illnesses - she spent time in Children's Hospital on 2 occasion before the age of 4. Although I can't compare it to your experience as a child, I know what I went through as a parent.

Apparently they cannot find the source of the outbreak? Seems strange, but I suppose it could be coincidence that people fell ill, and there was actually a different source for their exposure.

They never figured it out, Stid. There were no typhoid vectors in California in the 60's. Some fluke encounter they surmised. they treated it with some drug that could cause aplastic anemia. Another reason why I should see the doctor regularly, but don't -0
