only main roads are cleared. interstates were perfectly black and cleared. but how do the people in homes get out if their roads arent plowed.........

my question is: why do they make the main roads so perfect and leave the others unplowed? we saw two plow trucks going along a main road clearing about 6 inches more to the sides, which was not needed at all while the side roads are unplowed. it is ridiculous.

I think the point of now plowing the residential areas is to force people to stay home so they can get the roads clear. They can't clear the roads with people driving around on them.

Yes, the snowplows must start with main roads first so the residential roads are done last. Even here in the Buffalo area, where fighting snow is done professionally, the residential streets in the city are plowed last.

The DC area does not keep the same number of snow plows on hand and ready as New York and Philadelphia do. We don't get as much snow as the folks up north. It would be an unnecessary tax burden.

molly, the fact that the plows can go down seven locks road clearing six inches more of the shoulders makes me crazy when my street is totally unplowed. it is partly the weird thinking here that is so bad.if the plows on seven locks had instead gone down my street instead we would be plowed.

The plowing agenda is to clear the path to hospitals and fire houses first, then clear main roads, then residential areas. If your area is plowed by the local government, your residential area is low on the list. There is nowhere to go anyway, everything is closed.

All the reports I have seen say that there is not much "fresh food" at the grocery stores. The trucks have not been in for delivery in days. A massive storm like this slows things down and people have to work within the confines of it.

chains will only get you so far - if the snow is very deep, you're not going anywhere. they're great for traction and help you stop, but deep snow, everyone gets stuck

When there is a really big snow storm in the Sierras they just shut down the highways. But the snow plows do a really good job normally and you just have to use chains

here, lots of people put on winter tires in october. (i do, too) they're different than snow tires and remain supple in sub-zero temperatures

ohhh, careful - depending on what kind of car you have, you might want to gently accelerate, like a front wheel drive car - to pull you out of a skid. but it takes finesse and experience.
