how did they survive? clothing! they dressed in many layers in winter. my grandmother dressed like this: first a sleeveless pink cotton undershirt. it hung to her legs. then a corsette that went from just under her breasts over her hips. that required laces which had to be tightened every day. i helped her. then a bra. then underpants on top of the corsette. then a pair of, oh i forgot what it was called: cotton pants that went from her waist to her knees. then a shirt like a t shirt with long sleeves. then a full slip. and then a dress and a sweater. oh and i forgot: stockings! stockings that hooked to the garters hanging from the corsette. and the stockings were not like what we wear. they were thick cotton stockings. and then a sweater and she was ready for a cold day. she dressed while she was still in bed, under her "bet gevant". that was a huge feather bed thing which her mother made for her for her wedding. she had it to the day she died and i wish i knew what happened to it. i am sure it was tossed. too bad. i often slept with her in her double bed under that bet gevant and it was so so so warm. so so incredibly warm.

HAPPY ENDING to the pelican story! The poor thing had a fishing lure hanging from its wing and the fishing line snagged on our dock when it went into the water, so.. a volunteer from the Wildlife Center and I were able to net the bird, wrap it in a towel.. and it is now on its way to the vet. Ahh, relief.

The volunteer showed me how to hold pelican bills so that they don't bite you.. pelicans breathe through their bills, so you have to leave space by putting two of your fingers in the middle.. poor thing was shaking

I am much more of a forest person, but the big benefit of camping out in the deserts of CA is that you are totally disconnected ... BLM land ... no connections (even cell phone mostly). You just rest, read, drink, eat, play scrabble.
