The history of "pop" V.S soda is quite interesting, really. It stems for the way in which we used to bottle so4 it in the early days. We used thick, heavy glass bottles called "cod stoppers." Instead of a cork or cap, these cod-stoppers had a rubber ring with a glass marble inserted in the neck. The carbonation seated the marble up against the rubber washer, providing an effective seal. the way to open one of these was to use a pencil or a stick wand rap sharply on the top of the marble to break the seal. this made a loud "pop" sound hence the name.
