With Tom there, I am able to be a little less fearful -- sawed a branch off one of the chestnuts; fell down when it released... LOL bruised a little, but not really hurt. Accomplished two goals, though -- removed that branch and encouraged Tom and Grant to do the rest!
8:58 pm
Nef
not a word; but I need to pay attention
8:59 pm
stidmama
I was able to work near some plants I am allergic too, also -- only a minor reaction, but glad that Tom was there just in case. Taking care of myself, but not willing to be completely inactive! Looking forward to getting out there again later this week and finishing up some small pruning and planting tasks.
9:00 pm
Nef
LOL! I get frustrated when I'm told I can't do some of the things that need doing (my son is incredibly busy -- & bossy; so I'm never sure when he says I can't do something when that job might get done)
9:01 pm
stidmama
YES. that is exactly how I feel! Thanks for understanding. I am "good" when I have to be, but... I LIKE being able to really challenge myself!
9:02 pm
Nef
Are you purposely growing something you're allergic too or is it a "volunteer" or a weed?
9:03 pm
stidmama
No, it's a St. Johnswort plant my mother in law gave me (like so many allergies, this one is progressing and was not a contact allergy years ago). I pruned it back really severely. If it survives, we will transplant it in the fall to a location where it can grow unchecked and reach full size without being near the places I need to be able to work.
9:04 pm
stidmama
There are a few remnants of mints that I developed an allergy to after I planted them, but most of those are now removed. :-)
9:04 pm
Nef
Ahh! That makes sense.
9:04 pm
stidmama
Some plants are okay when I put them in, then I get allergic...
9:04 pm
Nef
That I understand.
9:05 pm
stidmama
I try to not plant anything I know I am allergic to.
9:07 pm
stidmama
I am really happy that I know "how" to garden -- even when I haven't been able to do much for a few years, I am pretty confident and can work quickly when I do have the help.
9:07 pm
Nef
That makes perfect sense. The only plant I have severe reactions to is burning weed; I'm not even very sensitive to poison ivy; but burning weed will make my arm or leg (or whatever touches it) numb for days!
9:08 pm
stidmama
Wish all of Grant's friends hadn't aged out of my price range... LOL if they aren't already fully employed, they are working on their final years of college and my paltry $10/hour rate isn't enough to really pay them back for the work they do.
9:08 pm
stidmama
I don't know what burning weed is. Mother has problems with members of the spurge family.
9:08 pm
Nef
I hear you there!
9:09 pm
Nef
I'm not sure if it's the same as burning nettle or not (& DH doesn't remember either)
9:09 pm
stidmama
three to go, a 6 and a couple of 7s
9:10 pm
stidmama
don't want to ask for clues because if they are fishy I will be embarassed...
9:10 pm
Nef
GO, stid! (I have 57 left!)
9:11 pm
Nef
I only have the 1 7 that I clued & I only have 3 of the 6's so far.
9:12 pm
stidmama
probably a nettle -- I LOVE nettles, and don't remove them where they grow in our yard (this year they were too mature before I got to them to harvest). They don't usually sting me, but the one time I got "bit" really hard, the joint pain in that hand was diminished for a couple days. I use it for the mild antihistamine properties of the tea.
9:13 pm
stidmama
But we have the urtica dioecia, not the "burning" one
9:14 pm
stidmama
two... the 6 was very fishy
9:14 pm
Nef
I don't know that one at all. And DH, with his agriculture degrees can't remember things like that any more.
9:15 pm
stidmama
and the ca 7 was fishy for me too... one to go.
9:15 pm
stidmama
I would imagine that your DH feels frustrated with the loss of knowledge. I would...
9:17 pm
Nef
He does. His memory is not as good as it used to be; but he has trouble with both recent memories & older ones. Which is odd.
9:18 pm
stidmama
That is odd... a more global issue than for many. Does he remember if he sees photos or other mementos? I forget many things, but if I see an artifact often it comes back to me.
9:20 pm
stidmama
and the no 7 was fishy, too.. :-( *sigh*
9:20 pm
stidmama
on the other hand, FW!!!
9:21 pm
Nef
Good question. He bought one of those things that you can put slides & pictures in & make DVDs from them several years ago & I'm trying to get him to do that; but he has never commented on the pictures when he can remember how to do it.
9:21 pm
Nef
YAY, stid!!! WTG!!!
9:23 pm
Nef
(and thanks for the clues. This is a tricky grid!)
9:31 pm
stidmama
I like digitized data myself, but sometimes the manipulation to make comments is more complicated than needed. Could he narrate to someone else who is doing the input?
9:32 pm
stidmama
When Mother and I look at family pics together I should record our conversations -- there is a LOT more information that comes out of her than just names, places, and dates!
9:34 pm
Bugsaw
LOL you two. I just arrived and looked up burning weed. All that is showed were pictures of huge piles of marijuana burning up!!!
9:35 pm
stidmama
hey bugs!
9:35 pm
Nef
I don't know if he could do that or not stid.
And Yes!! Do recored it! My 2 last remaining aunts were together on Friday, & I was there & tried to find out a few things from them. (they both have very severe heart failure, & were also the youngest of my mothers' family; so I doubt if they will be able to meet together like that again or not).
9:35 pm
Bugsaw
hello ladies. are you both sniffing away?
9:35 pm
stidmama
I am done bugs -- can help as needed
9:35 pm
Nef
Hi Bugs! That is hilarious! :-D
9:36 pm
Nef
I have 50 words left
9:37 pm
stidmama
I posted pics on fb just now of the young buck and doe that are daily visitors. I think they are the fawns from last year.
There is also an older (maybe 4 years) buck I see often, but haven't seen the mature doe so far this year. :-(
9:37 pm
Bugsaw
please write down the things that you learn from the elders. I didn't and asked my mother to write on the back who was in old family photos. When she forgot everytning the captions were things like, The aunts from back east". Nothing usefull
9:38 pm
stidmama
brb going to reheat supper.
9:40 pm
Nef
Bugs, this isn't "exactly" the plant we call burning weed here; but it's the closest picture of the plant I have problems with: http://tinyurl.com/gq9u3xv (it's the "stinging nettle" on this page)
9:45 pm
Bugsaw
Yes. We have stinging nettles and the young leaves make a nice tea and soup base.
9:45 pm
Nef
My daughter wanted the family story of my great (X3) grandmother during the Sioux Indian wars here in MN; so I called my older sister & she gave me this crazy hair-brained story that I'd never heard before; so I checked with our aunts & my cousins & none of them had ever heard this wild story either. But my sister says both the aunt who raised us & our grandmother told her this; & the one aunt looked at the other & they both said"well, she's Irish & they say the Irish "embellish" stories a lot!" (We've all agreed my sister was dreaming or smoking something!)
9:46 pm
Nef
How can you drink or cook with it?
9:47 pm
Bugsaw
Nef, you are right to be cautious but there is probably a kernel of truth in those stories so don't dismiss them entiredly. I have Irish ancestry too.
9:48 pm
Bugsaw
Apparently the sting disappeares with simmering and they do have medicinal qualities. Some people even eat the nettles like cooked spinach but I hate cooked spinach.
9:52 pm
Nef
Bugs, there is a cracked butter dish in the home I was raised in (my Aunt & Grandma both lived there). The story that the rest of us all know is that great Grandma had a baby, and some friendly indians stopped by their farm & told her that the rebellious indians were on the warpath & she should leave before they got there. Great (x3) grandma grabbed the baby & the butter dish & hid in the root celler for several days (which I understood was in the brambles). Why she would grab the butter dish has always confounded us.
9:56 pm
Puddin
a clue for the 2nd ti 6/18 please
9:56 pm
Nef
My sisters story involves great (x3) grandma taking the baby & heading into a local fort for safety; But stopping at a nearby farm & grabbing the freshly made butter & hearing a baby cry & finding a half scalped baby girl; which she packed up & took into the fort with her! And (according to my sister's story)20 some years later gr. grandma was working in her store & a young woman walked in and asked for her; pulled her hair off her forehead & showing her scar s to gr. grandma!
NO ONE serviving now ever heard of that before!
9:57 pm
Nef
Sorry, Pudding, I don't have it yet but will now look for it.
9:57 pm
stidmama
Maybe the same reason that Laura Ingalls Wilder grabbed the bread plate? It was the closest thing at hand...
9:57 pm
Bugsaw
I bet it was a true story. There were good natives who warned the settlers they liked and people used to hide in the root cellars. My guess is the the butter dish was the only thing they could bring from the "old country" because it was small and packable but was a memory of her mother. Cracked or not, it was a memory.
9:58 pm
Bugsaw
both stories are plausible!
10:00 pm
Bugsaw
IF you knew where they had settled you could check with historical records to see if a fort was close at hand. They opened the doors to neey people.
10:00 pm
Nef
Bugs, we know about the friendly Indians (& that our great (x3) grandparents were helping some of the Indians there, and we know the butter dish survived the Indian wars; it's the part about the buckboard & the scalped baby girl that was bizarre
10:01 pm
stidmama
That sounds reasonable, bugs.
10:01 pm
godthaab
FINISHED!! VERY EXCELLENT!!
10:01 pm
Bugsaw
It is bizarre but they may have hurt the baby and the mother panicked and ran thinking she was a goner.
10:02 pm
Bugsaw
Needy people, I meant , not neey people
10:02 pm
Bugsaw
YAY godhaab
10:02 pm
Nef
Oh yeah; we know all of that too. My one aunt is going to try & find the one cousins' family history because MaryJo was the family historian
10:02 pm
Nef
YAY godthaab!!! WTG!!!
10:03 pm
Bugsaw
Usually they would take the kids to be slaves but maybe not a baby. Who knows. It depends on which nation
10:04 pm
stidmama
I have several ancestors at various times (1600s and 1700s mostly) who were at or directly affected by the conflicts with native americans who were tired of being mistreated. Some survived the Mohawk attacks at Schenectady, another man was in town in North Carolina when a local group of revenge-takers slaughtered his family at home. :-(
10:04 pm
stidmama
YAY godthaab!
10:05 pm
Bugsaw
I have my grandmother's cake plate that came over from Ireland and was a much treasured plate. It has a thumb print in it from someone at the factory so it was probably cheap enough for them to afford. It has hand painted flowers all over so a man on a galloping horse would never notice.
10:07 pm
Nef
LOL! That "man on a galloping horse" phrase was one of my Grandmother's phrases, Bugs! :-)
10:08 pm
Bugsaw
Oh, how sad stid. My father's father''s family came to Canada in the early 1800's and his mother's family went to Illinois in the 1840ls if I remember correctly.
10:08 pm
Bugsaw
I got that from my mother's mother who came from Scottish stock, Nef. You are the only other person I know who has heard it. I love it. Keeps me from obsessing about the details.
10:09 pm
stidmama
Yes -- there was much sorrow (and bad blood) on all sides in the colonization of North America. It made me unhappy when I realized how the Europeans had thrown away so much good will and potential by insisting that they were overlords. :-(
10:10 pm
Nef
Pudding, I've found 2 ti6 words; both are ti6/18; one is a comparative size (smaller) and the other is the person who works with a common metal. (I will keep looking, though.
10:10 pm
Bugsaw
I think the early early settlers were the ones who started the scalping by taking topknots as trophies too.
10:11 pm
Bugsaw
thanks for the clues Nef
10:11 pm
Nef
Me, too Bugs; if a man on a galloping horse won't notice something; it isn't worth obsessing over.
10:14 pm
Puddin
thanks Nef...only 5 to go
10:15 pm
Nef
Here in Minnesota, The Sioux Uprising was caused by the white man's out & out greed and crookedness. The Indians didn't get the money promised by the white man & the trading posts stole the money that the Indians were owed & were almost starving the Sioux too.
10:15 pm
Nef
GO, Puddin!!!
10:16 pm
stidmama
go puddin go!
10:17 pm
Bugsaw
same here in Canada, sadly. I have old letters from my ancestors where they said the natives were starving and treated badly by the while soldiers and traders. My grandmother said that she did not know any white person who would have taken the disrespect and starvation with as much dignity as the natives. She admired them and helped when she could .
10:20 pm
Nef
I remember reading some things back in grade school about the "Indian Wars" and now as a grown up and reading what *really* happened; I feel very sad that history was that twisted.
10:22 pm
Bugsaw
there was so much misunderstanding back then that has filtered down to today. It is only thru education that our two peoples can truly reconcile and start a new beginning.
10:22 pm
Bugsaw
stid and I are both firm believers in that
10:23 pm
stidmama
I try to be clear with my students that NOT all colonizers and settlers and such were aware at the time that they were or intended to take away the lands and rights of natives; some were kind and did the best they could to get along. But there were many who really did intend to harm.
10:27 pm
stidmama
What I really struggle against is how to explain that, truthfully, many people in the past really were NOT aware of so much. I teach very young children... I do not want to disillusion them of the possibility of people getting along; but I also try to make it clear that sometimes bad things happen on purpose -- and then history teaches us to stand up for what is right. It's a challenging tightrope...
10:27 pm
Nef
That is true, stid. And yes, Bugs, it's just sad that it's taken this long for the general public to try to work together & begin again.
10:28 pm
Puddin
i have 3 to go...2 t's and a pi 6/21....anyone have a clue for me?
10:29 pm
Nef
It is indeed, stid; & right now that's so hard for children to understand because the media has to bring all the bad stuff into their homes 24/7.
10:29 pm
Puddin
and one is a to 7
10:30 pm
Nef
pi 6/21 is a western (or southwestern?) tree
10:33 pm
stidmama
to 7 is a sort of candy chocolate roll. also the name of a robin williams movie
10:34 pm
Nef
to 7 is a movie with Dustin Hoffman in drag
10:34 pm
Nef
Robin Williams? I don't remember anymore.
10:36 pm
Nef
I need to list because I just keep typing in the same words all the time.
10:36 pm

Mrs. Doubtfire was Robin Williams.

nighty night all, and good luck with the new gristle, i mean grid
11:25 pm
Nef
I know how that goes; the grids have been either too small or too big on days when I either had lots of time to do the long grids (but those are the days with the tiny ones) or not enough time to do huge grids.
11:25 pm
Nef
Good Night, Gwen.
