and you can call after-hours for a fee, but they waive the fee for the first few months of your baby's life, or if they end up telling you to go to the ER.

We do not charge for after-hours phone calls, in fact we PAY a triage service to take calls for US from 9pm-8am. I wish we could make the parents pay for phone calls but about 1/3 of our population is Medicaid. We are a rural practice--high poverty rate.

the after-hours line is really intended for emergencies, which they dont charge for.

We get ridiculous phone calls--questions about Tylenol doses, diaper rashes, whether to send a kid to day care/school the next day, etc...questions that can be answered on our web site or by our triage nurses the next day when the office is open. I agree that if parents had to pay then they might think twice...or run to the ER because with Medicaid the cost is FREE!
