hi dim, the 7 and 8 (same word tnense change) means "striped"
9:14 am
Minski
I have 2 7-40s. Both start with D and they are very similar words, at least in the way they are spelled. The consonents are almost the same, the vowels are different.
9:14 am
dimwit
Mmmm thanks, fit1, I''ll work on that.
9:18 am
Minski
does striped mean without clothing or like the flag's red and whites?
9:21 am
jlm_mi
You cannot make a 7/26 or a 7/45 for anyone who was asking about them earlier. It's mathematically impossible, since all 7 letter words have point values that are multiples of 4.
9:21 am
true_felicity
Stripe = as in with stripes. Stripped, would be to remove.
9:27 am
dimwit
Cannot think of any more words for striped that fit the puzzle. Even tried the online Thesaurus. Better take a break and come back fresh after a coffee.
9:33 am
Minski
thesaurus.com doesn't have the word "striped" that's why I thought maybe you spelled the word incorrectly. sorry for doubting you. I guess Mr. Roget doesn't know everything.
Could you please, pretty please with sugar and a cherry on top, tell us the starting letter? I feel so stupid. Everyone has this word but me.

I googled the Lord of the Ring clue-- I didn't see the movie, and if I read the book it was 300 years ago, so... I can't hook up any of the 21 names I found...... aaargh.
The striped clue? I'd think layers of the rocks, rathe than striped animals or curtains..
Okay, back to Bilbo et al.

i just found the 8 /55 don'y i feel silly.
12:43 pm
jlm_mi
Christine - You don't need to know LOTR to get that word. It's a perfectly normal word that just happens to be the "nickname" of one of the characters.
It's a 7-32. Here are the 7s I have so far so you can see where it falls in the list.
40,40,44,40,40,36,44,40,40,28,32,44,40
12:48 pm
true_felicity
Wait, so there's two 8's? One for 45 and one for 55?
12:48 pm
Christine
jlm_mi -- is it anything like the name of one of the 21? (garbled sentence!).
I should've stayed away.. I'm trying to finish "Rule of FOur"... lots of encryption and encoding (there's a clue)
12:48 pm
jlm_mi
felicity - there are 4 8s. See anceps post earlier for a breakdown of the words by length
12:49 pm
jlm_mi
I'm not sure what that sentence meant, Christine, but if you're asking "is it related to a 6-letter word for 21 points/" then the answer is yes. :)
12:50 pm
true_felicity
Pfft, that's what comes of having to actually work occasionally. You miss stuff.
1:05 pm

I'd appreciate a clue or two, for the 7 letter d words, been busy on other things for a bit and still can't see any.......Does one begin with doc?
1:39 pm
jlm_mi
Yes, but not pronounced like doctor. Three of them use the same 3-letter prefix. The 5th would be a slang word. You might expect to hear its 4-letter counterpart, equivalent of darn!, more often.
They are 40,44,40,40,36 points.
1:40 pm
jlm_mi
Oh, and so as not to confuse, I don't mean that three of them use doc. One is doc, then 3 others with a different prefix. :)
1:42 pm

Here's some clues on the E's:
1 is a plant
1 is something a secretary would do
2 are something a politician would do
3 are something a programmer would do

onyx - not sure. I only have 5. But I've only found 13 of the 15 7-letter words.
I posted my list of point values, in alphabetical order, at 12:43. If you have different ones, that may help determine if there are more Ds.

Not absolutely sure, but there are certainly close to that many. Probably somewhere between 210 and 216. ;) I'm at 172 and I don't have some of the Es or Cs, so I can probably help you figure out where to look for a few more:
16xA
30xC (there are at least 32)
28xD

2:05 pm
true_felicity
Wouldn't that be "tediae"?
2:08 pm
Atalante
I *think* (after due consideration of the lists of word values) I've got 1 7 different to you jlm_mi ... its 44 and comes either above or below your first 40 (but I haven't got that one so I can't be absolutely sure LOL)
2:09 pm
jlm_mi
Naw, tedia/tedium just like data/datum.
2:10 pm
jlm_mi
Atalante, my first 7 is NOT a D word, but my next 5 are. Does that make a difference in your analysis?
2:22 pm
true_felicity
Hah, I found two more P's, a 6 and a 7! Now I have 14 P's. For a clue to this, think a special type of person, that even has his (or her) own day in the US.
2:23 pm
true_felicity
And that brings me up to 181.
2:24 pm
Atalante
My first one isn't either ...... its a C 44
2:29 pm
jlm_mi
felicity - Is that your only P7? I have a P6/7 combo. The 7 is worth 40. But I don't think I know of them having a day in the US????
2:29 pm
jlm_mi
Atalante - My first 7 is an A word.
2:30 pm
jlm_mi
OK, I looked it up. Is this day September 19. Not exactly an official holiday. ;)

Yeah, you got it (there are 2 6's btw). Think "Talk like a ..." Day. ;)
2:31 pm

jlm... don't tell me you missed 'talk like a ___ day'!
2:32 pm

2:33 pm

2:39 pm

I think I found the other two P/6's you have? Are they sort of synonyms?
2:41 pm
true_felicity
I'm sorry, they're sort of antonyms.
2:41 pm
jlm_mi
I have 4xP-6. One goes with the 7. I can't really think of a way that the others are related to one another. Their point values, in order (including the 7-related one):
24,30,24,27
2:42 pm
jlm_mi
As a realllllly good stretch I could say that maybe the 3rd and 4th are sort of opposite in meaning.
2:43 pm
true_felicity
Well, if you think about it, two of them are sort of opposites of each other. :) But I have all four.
There is also an R6 that's a musical term that I just now got. :-/ And I'm a musician, heh.
2:44 pm
true_felicity
In fact, that fact that I didn't get that R6 musical term is due to the fact that I'm another R6 that can be found on the board. ;)

2:47 pm

2:58 pm

I'd guess it's not a witchy word you've ever heard of. At least, I know I haven't. Atalante, being British, knew the word. I found it knowing the score (not too many possible ways to make it) and then noodling. It's actually a compound word, though neither word's original meaning has anything to do with the total meaning.
5:50 pm
periwinkle
Well I probably won't get it.

The witchy word is a compound oof two words - 3 and 4 - and you probably have both words in your list...

No wonder I couldn't find the c-word - I was looking for the incorrect number of points. Found it, finally.

Haven't quite figured out how to find a word using the number of points in the word.

I have the following 7's. d/7/40, d/7/44, d/7/40, e/7/44, e/7/40, p/7/40, s/7/28 and the plural for s/8/45, and s/7/32. I am missing 7 seven letter words and one 8 letter word. Would someone please tell me what they start with. I know there is a c/7/44 but I cannot find it.

peri - The word is 7 letters for 44 points. If you look to the right, you'll see a chart of how points are calculated. So, you would add up the points of all the letters in the word, then multiply by 4 for the 7 letters. That means that the points in the word add up to 11 in this case.
If each letter were 1 point, it would add up to 7 (obviously), so you need 4 extra points somewhere.
You know it begins with C, worth 3 points, or 2 extra points. Now you need two more extra points.
The Qu is too big at 6 points. The only other multi-point letters are P (2 extra points) and D (1 extra point).
So, in your 7-letter word you'll use the C, and either use the P or 2 Ds.
A hint - this word uses the P.

Oh, man, I'm doing too much babbling. I almost didn't put a word into today's puzzle because I thought I already had. Turns out, that was yesterday!
When I clicked the definition button I recognized it, and couldn't understand why two words today had the exact same definition. LOL!
Oh, and it's only 4 letters, so don't waste too much time scouring yesterday's word list. :-D

the 8 for 55 starts with an S. To get it add a suffix to a S 6 for 27

I'll have to give up on the u words unless someone can give me some clues as to their meanings. I have tried all sort of combinations, been through scrabble and ordinary dictionaries and anagram finders and nothing comes up to match at all!
9:21 pm

3 of the u's are related to something you do to your datebook or calendar when you make a new appointment.
4 of the 5 of them start with the same 2 letters.

I have a few that start with a prefix meaning above, and go from there. One has to do with a calendar, then add a suffix

Four of the U words start with the same 2 letters, the fifth word is an annual bean grown in India. Does that help? I found the fifth one in my Scrabble Players Dictionary. But its not in the Dictionary.com.
