it was a region 9 retreat, so the language was english for the meetings and speakers. Amongst ourselves it was anything from french to german, dutch, flemish... a true babel of languages.

no, not if you haven't studied them. Flemish and Dutch are closest, we can understand most of what the other says. Then german, but that takes study to learn. French is even more different. French is closer to spanish and italian, but again, it would take study to learn to understand properly.

Even stranger is the situation in Belgium, where people are not separated by any border but still fight passionately when it comes to the language difference between flemish and french.
