That too
9:45 pm
mkg
i wonder where the word ev****** came from. i get the last 5 letters, but what does ev mean added in front?
9:46 pm
mkg
i mean what does ev mean as a prefix? cant think of another case of it.
9:47 pm
SamanthaJoy
mkg: It was originally "eu", not "ev", and that prefix means "good". Think "euphoria".
9:48 pm
bookwomen
It is from the bible and means spreading of good news. It is from a greek word
9:48 pm
PastorJ
I don't think 'ev' is a prefix in this case, mkg - it's a completely different word.
9:48 pm
SamanthaJoy
"Gene", as a name, means bred. "Eugene" means well bred.
9:49 pm
SamanthaJoy
No, pastor, it is a prefix. The last five letters of that word are based on the concept that *****s are, in the old testament, messengers. There's a root that means "to announce".
9:50 pm
bookwomen
SamanthaJoy is correct. It is a prefix
9:50 pm
SamanthaJoy
So eu = good, an*** = root of a word meaning "announce", and the word as a whole becomes "spreader of good news"
9:51 pm
PastorJ
Learn something new every day, even at my age! The following day though I usually forget...
9:52 pm

Ha, I'm with you there!

To my shame I've known the meaning of the word so long I've never bothered to learn its history.
9:54 pm
SamanthaJoy
It was a revelation when I learned that the opposite of myopia is presbyopia
11:09 pm
Tomago
As a biologist, I've always taken the eu- prefix to mean true or genuine, as opposed to psedo-. So I've had a hard time making sense of it in many of its uses. Thanks for the insights.
