lt's yet ANOTHER May Holiday, but my new gardeners arrived at 8 andmy watchdog, Rufie went crazy
3:15 am
rubyfoo
At least l know l'm well-protected!
3:20 am
flosey
Rufie sounds like a real gem
3:26 am
rubyfoo
He's wonderful. He's never bitten anyone, but l think he would if l was threatened.
3:27 am
rubyfoo
And he looks very scary which is, in itself, a good deterrent
3:29 am
flosey
yes, that will usually deter someone with the wrong intentions
3:31 am
rubyfoo
He's never been trained, but his instincts are perfect and both dogs never do anything bad
3:32 am
rubyfoo
sorry, no more "talking" for me
3:33 am
flosey
no problem, it didn't count anyway. Good luck to you
3:34 am

Thank you, Sweet Dreams!

*waving back* Hi Origami and Shirlock.
8:47 am
NatashaW
Hi Scrabs, recovered from your hike?
8:48 am
Scrabbler
Still exhausted, but elated and high and my head remains on the AT. :-)
8:48 am
NatashaW
wow... nice.
8:49 am
NatashaW
"Forest bathing" taken to its highest level
8:49 am
origami
How many miles did you hike?
8:49 am
Scrabbler
50 miles in 5 days, in Shenandoah National Park.
8:49 am
Shirlockc
wow, that's some hike!
8:50 am
Scrabbler
Many folks, especially the through-hikers do 20 -22 miles daily. I saw a through-hiker in Harpers Ferry, WV, where I stopped on my way home, that was planning on 43 miles that day, and it was 91 degrees.
8:51 am
NatashaW
That sounds more like running than hiking
8:52 am
Scrabbler
For those folks every minute of sunlight, and good weather, means another foot farther.
8:52 am
Shirlockc
i walk fast ~ 3 miles/hr, and i don't think i can maintain that pace for > 10 hrs
8:52 am
Scrabbler
Their pace might be 4 mph on flat terrain.
8:52 am
NatashaW
Personally I prefer to savor my surroundings not rush past them, but to each their own
8:53 am
Scrabbler
I agree, Natasha. I like to look around and to take photos.
8:54 am
NatashaW
"The journey, not the arrival, matters"
8:55 am
Scrabbler
Yes. On the flat, smooth sections I picked up the pace at times. But I love nature and am a tree geek.
8:55 am
NatashaW
Me 2, love plant taxonomy and trees in particular.
8:55 am
Shirlockc
i do that in NYC, no trees but lots of windows :)
9:01 am
Scrabbler
Natasha, mostly there were oaks and hickories, and some areas had black cherry trees. Not many conifers.
9:01 am
Scrabbler
Some shagbark hickories too.
9:02 am
NatashaW
Yes, I've hiked the Shenendoah, though only modest day hikes, nothing like what you did. My favorite place for tree-gazing so far has been the temperate rainforest in Olympic National Park in Washington State.
9:04 am
Scrabbler
My #1 love is the Adirondack Mtns and I will go there in June, July, and Oct.
9:04 am
NatashaW
I keep passing through there on the way to Montreal (my son goes to McGill)... must plan a stop one time!
9:05 am
NatashaW
Where do you go in the Adirondacks?
9:08 am
Scrabbler
This summer: Lake Placid (3 days of backpacking), Newcomb, and Minerva.
9:09 am
Scrabbler
My neighbor's kid goes to McGill. I think he just graduated.
9:09 am
NatashaW
I've been (briefly) to Lake Placid but will look up the other 2, not familiar with them.
9:10 am

My son started there this past year, entered as a soph due to APs, will be done in 3 deus vult

Natasha, I just had a Babble meetup in Leesburg, VA with some local Babblers then stayed with one on Hagerstown overnight. I see that you are in MD. When I return for more AT hiking we need to meet.
9:12 am

I spent a few hours in Harpers Ferry last Tuesday.
9:14 am
NatashaW
We love Harper's Ferry - the confluence of hte rivers. Have they rebuilt the burnt area?
9:15 am
NatashaW
never mind, go shop for your mom. Look forward to meeting you one of these days!
9:15 am
Scrabbler
Hm, I don't know the burnt area. Yes, I must go.
