We had a Japanese exchange student stay with us a couple of years ago. She went to school 240 days a year from 8 am to 6 pm, then home for homework, dinner, and bed. I'm certainly not advocating that as it seems to leave no room for enjoying life, but our school system is still built around the idea that the kids are needed to help around the farm. That's not going to keep our nation competitive in the 21st c.
