amazing what they can do. I recall my mother-in-law telling my husband she could just call a number, put the phone on her chest, and somehow her pacemaker communicated with something at her doctor's that could tell if it was working okay, or even needed a new battery.

I know!! I truly am amazed. I knew the general principles of the implant, and we did a lot of research together, including talking to others who had the DBS. But until I witnessed the first programming and testing, I really only had a bare inkling of what they can do. I guess they keep it simple, but I'm retired IT...

Yes, it helps a lot. I think hubs is a bit baffled - he won't touch his controller without me looking over his shoulder, but he is learning that pushing a button won't hurt, that he can always push the other button that takes it down if he doesn't like the way it feels. He has only used it once, but has a stressful situation to deal with tomorrow, so he can deal with learning his controller "deal-a-ma-gig" after that stress is over.

It is not exactly that simple. The Enable Word List just randomly chooses what words it will include and what words it will not. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

As far as the adopted Japanese and Indian words go, I have found them to be in common use in the US, often with those of military or international business backgrounds. I've lived and worked in both countries and have a working knowledge of Japanese as well as the Dravidian and some Indo-Euro vocabularies. "shiso" is known by Americans who like Japanese food, especially if they make it with that spice (or herb, not sure which).
