The R/8/45 is not a common word. It is a scientific unit of measure that appeared in a puzzle a few weeks ago, though. You will not likely stumble across it unless you have a fairly strong scientific background. The second letter is O.

8-40 R - more foul

7-36 C - dictionary definition would be more unsophisticated and trite. I guess that's not exactly the meaning I'd give it, but don't know how to put my finger on a better one. Maybe someone else can help.
7-40 P - cleaned feathers
7-40 R - became mature
7-32 R - alternate spelling of 8-45 R
7-32 T - describes wood joined in a particular fashion
7-28 T - the person who would do the previously mentioned joining

Daisy, there is a resource I use called a2zwordfinder.com for when I'm really stuck. I don't know if people would consider it cheating because you still have to find the words yourself, but you can type in beginnings or endings or parts of words and it will list the words that contain it, which is a big help sometimes.
