my kids are at that "feral" age. I want them to have some independence (like i did when i was their age), but also some would say they shouldn't be unsupervised (riding bikes around our small town, for instance). its a balancing act.

Yes, they have to earn your trust and must have some independence. The feral children I refer to and perpetual toddlers--rude, disrespectful, irresponsible, etc. Then parents ask me what medication to put the kid on.
