we are lucky to live in massachusetts - the latest legislation contains excellent advancements in several areas, particularly the inclusion of an alternate gender marker on state forms, students forms, etc. Once a student is 14, they have legal access to their records, and can choose a non-binary marker.

its a complicated issue, as you could imagine, but I was really proud of our staff. Everyone is in such different places with these concepts. I was glad that those who had questions, especially about terms and nomenclature, asked them. Example: for many people, "queer" is a pejorative.

there is no reason someones sex is needed other than for dormitory placements. that is my opinion. i am tired of this whole idea. just put a persons name without any mister or miss or misses or anything. just a name. period. the idea of formality was always silly and in todays world isnt needed. my name is all you need. i get mail for mister and ms. my first name, Minka, is one that no one knows what it is.

its about making space for everyone, mkg. every student should feel seen and valued. no one should ever be made to feel ashamed of who they are, especially when it's factors beyond their control. The data alone was VERY sobering. OMG the suicide, self-harm and physical injury rates of kids in the LGBTQ community are totally out of proportion

open up the bathrooms and put walls around each toilet and then they can be used by either men or women and you can stand at a sink no matter what sex you are. in some foreign countries this is how it is. tiny areas with walls and a door with only a toilet, and then a sink somewhere outside mounted on a wall. sinks now come in 9 inch depths. as to urinals, you can mark some door saying "urinal inside" and then people can choose to use that or go to a toilet.

good for you seain! I have to say, it can be overwhelming in the setting I am in. its hard enough to track the names and learning requirements of 140+ students, and now to add in remembering who wants what pronoun, and which name to use with them vs their parents....it's a lot, I have to say. But I am totally, utterly committed to making it happen. My classroom is a place in which EVERY student WILL feel safe and valued.

trifioso, so as i say, we do not need to have a sex stated for students! get the bathrooms changed. who came up with the silly idea of a ladies and mens bathrooms anyway? better that you have tiny "rooms" like in europe: there are bathrooms that are 3/4 of a meter by 1.5 meters and inside and have toilet and a tiny sink on the wall.........open the spaces that are now girls rooms and boys rooms and put a hall with these tiny rooms. it would work except for wheel chairs and then you have some wheel chair ones. no sex is needed at all then.
