Splendid as always. I sprung for the entire season this year. Tonight's program was something else: Haydn Symphony 34—equisite, A new work called Okeanos for organ and orchestra that was a tour-de-force, imaginative, approachable, and just thrilling. They finished with Tchaikovsky Symphony #5. The proncipal winds were esp luscious, in particular the clarinit, Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist John Claoser, and the principal horn, who is as yet unnamed since he is auditioning at this point.
2:02 am
melonheadjujube
I've never done a whole season before. It is good for my soul to hear the orchestra week in and week out. I am a retired bassist who played for a ballet and opera company here. I miss playing, but have turned my love of music into more listening. Cleveland is a cultural powerhouse.

Everything gets discussed here, including current affairs and news etc. But for many of us, this is our release each day from the woes of the world. Besides, some subjects give rise to disagreement, so many of us avoid those topics. Some people, who've been playing for years, are actually quite interested in one another's toe fungus!

yeah, the experiences are great and always nice to see new cultures, even if the language barrier gets harder and harder along the trip -- started in london and traversed the nordics and baltics (oslo-stockholm-helsinki-tallinn-riga) and visited warszawa and berlin before flying home... before germany, the languages got further and further from english and other familiar languages!
2:30 am

whatever you say, Kimmy. Whatever you say.

indeed, dfm. Finnish is not an Indo-European language, for one thig!

I have found that as I've aged, I prefer to be based in one place and travel from there. Fortunately for us, one of our sons has lived in London, Dubai and Cape Town, so we got enjoy those places for extended stays, and travelled with him further afield. It has spoilt me for any other travel.
2:33 am
dfmchfhf
google translate was little help in finland either, learning finnish (also estonian) by trial-and-error was interesting
2:33 am

It was a great trip. For five weeks I traveled alone, and anwered to n-one. I told my [grown] kids, "don't call too often!"

Oh, and on the advice of a very experienced friend, I did this with one carry-on bag and a small shoulder bag. Full disclosure—it was summer. And Yay for Ex Officio travel underwear!
2:35 am
sprite
lol melon! Is it hard for your kids to understand you do not always want to answer your phone? My kids actually give me lip if I do not bring my cellphone when walking my dog! Which I never do... why should I want to have telephone convos while walking my te5?
2:35 am

what is travel underwear? Wear and discard?

It all started when my friend in Regensburg, who goes back to music school days said, "I can't believe you've never been to Europe, come see me!" What started out as a two-week trip just grew and grew (thanks, Mom and Dad, wherever you may be_I spent the money!)

ooh, this trip started out as a two-week trip to just stockholm and helsinki too, ended up growing into a 5-week trip... funny how all these european cities attract and inflate travel plans!
2:38 am
melonheadjujube
Travel underwear washes by hand and dries quickly. The Ex Officio is a very breathable nylon. I also one pair of merino woll underpants that were very comfortable, but disintegrated when I accidentally machine washed them after I got home.
2:38 am
melonheadjujube
For me it was this: I hate flying, so I figured, if I'm going, I'm staying for a while!

flying to europe from u.s./canada is relatively expensive too (but not as much as australia/NZ) so might as well take advantage of cheaper inter-european travel, right?

Trying to remember the brand name of the Merino undies. . . ah! Icebreakers. Yes expensive.
2:40 am
sprite
hehehe good thinking, dofith! Yep, not attached to my phone. I have it for my use, not to please others. I am from the generations that only had a home-based phone with the hearing part attached by a cord... and rotary phone...

*hugs Kam* Hello dear one, how are you doing? Is Michael back home with you? How was his dad doing?
2:46 am
melonheadjujube
So, Sprite, actually, I traveled with one device, my tablet. I had Skype, internet, and camera. The thing about the kids not calling was mostly a joke. Seriously, I would wish for anyone totake an extended trip alone.
2:46 am
Kamanjah
Yes, he only went overnight this last time, but Dad isn't answering his phone. Niece talked to him and he said he "doesn't feel like answering." He is depressed, and that's not good.
2:47 am
melonheadjujube
Kam, I am considering buying a few pair. Just have to remember to hand wash.
2:47 am
dofith
Yes, Kam - Oz used to ride on the sheep's back, so they said. Had a pet (merino) lamb once; fell off the back of a truck, literally. My Dad had been out in the night delivering a baby and came home with the lamb and spun me a weird story linking the two events!
2:47 am
sprite
it is really different, isn't it, melon, to travel alone. People react so differently to you, I have always found. More open, very hospitable, and being alone makes one experience the surroundings different too.
2:48 am
Kamanjah
I put in those "delicate" bags that zip up and wash on gentle, then hang dry. They
2:48 am

no, that is not good indeed, Kam, am so sorry. The transition is hard on him, it seems.

all true, sprite. I liked being a stranger in a strange land. Someone said I was brave to travel alone. I had to laugh. I told them, for me, brave would be traveling with someone for five weeks. I relished my solitary adventures.

We had an amazing double rainbow a few months back. My son and I were headed to a park to watch the sun set over the lake. I saw the rainbow in my rear view mirror. When we got to the park, it was still going strong. Everyone was stading in slackjawed silence marveling at this complete double rainbow, arcing from Lake Erie and over the coty. Then. . . between the two rainbows were bolts of lightning. All that and we made a new friend by starting aconversation.

What was amazing was how ong this rainbow lasted. I first saw it as I entered the freeway, got to the lake some 15 minutes later, and it persisted for I'd say another 20 min. Funny thing is, of course it was opposite the sunset. I kept turning my head—sunset, rainbow, sunset, rainbow. . .
