hi Kam :) *hug* How are you doing today?
1:02 am
Kamanjah
I got some long overdue stuff out of the way, so I'm happy! How are you doing?
1:03 am
sprite
ah that can be such a relief. I am okay.
1:12 am
sprite
and how is Michael?
1:13 am
Kamanjah
Doing well. His cut finger is healing nicely, but it has kept him from going to his Rock Steady boxing program. Can't be punching bags with a one inch gash in your middle finger!
1:13 am
sprite
better not, lol. But not fun that he is missing out on his boxing. It does him a world of good, doesn't it?
1:14 am
Kamanjah
So, his balance is suffering a bit, and he's been sleeping more, but I think once he gets back "with the program" he'll be a lot better. He finished his cabinet, and it looks great!
1:15 am
sprite
woooot for Michael! Good job!
1:17 am
Kamanjah
I think Rock Steady is one of the greatest programs for Parkinson's! They had to cancel one session last week due to power outages, but I'm hoping by next week, his finger will be ready for a light workout - at least he can do all of the whole body exercise and keep his hand away from danger.
1:19 am
sprite
sounds good. Am so happy for you guys that this is so rewarding.
1:21 am
Kamanjah
I'm glad they have a class that's not an hour away! It takes about 35-40 minutes to get there, but he enjoys getting out, and the town where the classes are has great grocery stores! So we get better food too - bonus!
1:22 am
sprite
win-win all the way. Sounds like a real blessing, honey
1:22 am

I harvested my first two apples today! No bird damage either!
1:23 am
sprite
lol awesome :D Enjoy them.
1:24 am
Kamanjah
I shall! And the neighbor's horses don't get any that are intact! The dog may get a few nibbles - he just loves apples!
1:25 am
sprite
aww so cute
1:26 am
Kamanjah
That's how Michael cut his finger - feeding the horses! The local grocery will sell a huge bag of old apples for a couple of bucks, so we always grab them. Neighbor rescued an Arab gelding a few months back - he was skin and bones. He looks like a different critter now - very sweet boy. Fattened up nicely with decent care.
1:29 am
sprite
that is so good to hear. People can be so cruel to animals. Glad this one found a safe and loving home.
1:33 am
Kamanjah
She called Michael the day she adopted him - she was worried he would think neglect - he was the animal control officer for our county for 20 years and he had to contact her once several years ago about another she had rescued. He found no neglect, but she felt picked on - that was before we got together. She has spayed and neutered every feral cat in the area that she could trap, so we have plenty of cats, but I haven't seen kittens in several years. Good neighbor!
1:34 am
sprite
very good neighbour! And a good idea of her to tell Michael about the new rescue. Imagine, getting a bad rep while you are doing so much good work!
1:37 am
Kamanjah
Good neighbors are hard to come by - we're lucky - only have four with adjoining properties. The folks behind us now are new, and aren't too friendly, but I hope they manage to feel welcome - it's a nice rural area.
1:38 am
sprite
they may learn from the rest how nice it is to be friendly with your neighbours. We have always good neighbours, thank God
1:43 am
Kamanjah
I feel blessed here, after living in cramped housing tracts in Southern Calif for most of my life. I'm just glad I didn't buy a larger place 20 years ago! We get by now, but if not for Michael, I'd be hiring help now! I used to maintain it all by myself, but couldn't manage now. Amazing what 20 years can do, lol!

2:04 am
Kamanjah
Now you know the difference! I can't imagine carrying that much excess fluid - I'm super sensitive to any "water weight" - it's miserable. I hope you are feeling much better.
2:06 am
Lizlin
Hey Rose - didn’t realise you ‘d been unwell. HOpe you’re feeling much better with all that weight loss.
2:06 am

i am lizgirl. and kam, now i know what it feels like.
2:09 am
Kamanjah
It's totally different, and I'm glad you finally got that straightened out! You'll feel better - but remember to stay hydrated too.
2:12 am
grannyrose
kam, i have a freezer full of icy pole tubes. only 70ml (2oz) per tube.
2:14 am
grannyrose
one of those every hour or two keeps me from screaming for a drink. i find the cold helps quench my thirst more. also a small bowl of fresh fruit salad keeps the salivary glands working and my mouth moist.
2:24 am
Kamanjah
Sorry to disappear for a few - had some chores needing doing!
Do you have to restrict your water intake? That would drive me crazy because I get dry mouth so badly.
2:25 am
grannyrose
yes, kam, to 1.5liter/day. that's just over 50 ounces.
2:26 am
Kamanjah
I use the xytol mints at night to try to keep my mouth from turning into a desert.
2:27 am
Kamanjah
Oh dear, that must be difficult. You're dealing with way more than I am. Sending prayers your way!
2:28 am
grannyrose
it's nearly 6:30pm here. and i have 800mls (27oz) left for the day. allows me a BIG glass of cold drink after dinner and then some.
2:29 am
Lizlin
Have a good evening Rose. Hugs
2:29 am
grannyrose
yes the xytol mints are great especially if you think your breath is stinky too from the dry mouth.
2:29 am
grannyrose
you too lizgirl. xoxox to you both
2:31 am
Kamanjah
I use one or two when I get in bed just to try to keep my mouth hydrated - the cavities from dry mouth are getting expensive! You'll never see me without a jug of water. I'm sorry you have to deal with fluid intake restrictions.
2:31 am
grannyrose
it's hard kam as i am also taking a med to stop the heavy water loss through my skin. i perspire so heavily my hair becomes dripping wet, and my back is soaking. the med also dries out my mouth.
2:35 am
Kamanjah
Uh, have they figured out what is causing all of the water retention while you're losing so much at the same time? I hope you can get a handle on that! If I had to restrict fluids I think I might go a bit crazy. I hope they can get your system straightened out soon!

Just in case anyone is keeping track of these ... For the next (ha!) edition of the Enable Dictionary: PSION. A psion is a subatomic particle, a flavor-neutral meson consisting of a charm quark and a charm antiquark. [I mean, you can't get any cuter than that!]
6:40 am
Deeha
Id like to give the enable dictionary a jolly good shake up. I find lots of words quite offensive
6:46 am
MollyL
People were talking about that yesterday. The purpose of a dictionary (or word list, like Enable) is to define words. All words.
6:52 am
sukee
Words are words...
6:55 am
MollyL
I read an article about one of the editors of the Merriam Webster Dictionary that said "There’s no escaping profanity, which is why dictionaries can’t be precious. Editors have to include slurs, curses, and other offensive words in linguistic compilations because they’re responsible for keeping a cultural record that contains the good, the bad, and the ugly."
7:05 am
mattygroves
Words (and things) are only offensive if you take offense - and everyone has different things that offend them. There are definitely words that most people don't use in polite company but that doesn't mean they don't exist and so will always exist in dictionaries and word lists that depend on them
7:05 am
jwr again
sukee and Molly speak truth. I try to remember that "offense" is totally subjective, and that what makes people uncomfortable in one "English" may be acceptable or have an entirely different in another part of the world. It's an amazingly flexible language. {And Babble has its own censorship, after all: there are words that NEVER appear in the grids]
7:05 am
Lizlin
I totally agree Matty - it's about how words are used.
7:05 am
mattygroves
I'd rather be offended, as a rule, than censored.
7:06 am
sukee
Well said matty
7:06 am
Lizlin
I agree with that too.
7:06 am
marilyn992
I also agree. I don't think the dictionary should be censored.
7:06 am
MollyL
Just curious. What words NEVER appear. We have had all the "usual suspects" when it comes to offensive words.
7:06 am
jwr again
matty: Snap!
7:06 am
jwr again
The "n" word, for instance.
7:07 am
mattygroves
Also, there's a difference between acknowledging a word exists and using it in conversation.
7:07 am
jwr again
And the "c'
7:07 am
sukee
I have seen the c word in here.
7:07 am
mattygroves
The C word is definitely accepted in Babble
7:08 am
MollyL
The c word is in grids a lot.
7:08 am
MollyL
The n word is accepted in Babble as well.
7:09 am
Lizlin
Language changes - in the Middle Ages the c word was not taboo.
7:09 am
MollyL
As a matter of fact, whenever the c word is in grids, there are at least five or six "oh, I hate that word" comments.
7:09 am
mattygroves
The funny thing, too, about language, is how it changes. Some words lose their sting/offensiveness over time (at least for large sections of a population). 'Hell' would have been seen as a much naughtier word even 50 or 60 years ago than it typically is now. It made a stir when Star Trek used that word, only once.
7:09 am
jwr again
hmm. I've never seen either of them. I'll take your "words" for it.
7:10 am
mattygroves
I think it's always dangerous, though, when someone says 'that thing shouldn't exist.' I hate reality TV programmes, but I don't propose they should be banned (that's what the off switch and the channel changer is for)
7:10 am
sukee
I have never seen the N word in here.
7:10 am
Lizlin
Fireworks - so good night from Australia.
7:10 am
mattygroves
Congrats - sleep well!
7:11 am
MollyL
I'm convinced that if women would stop cringing and crying every time a man pulls out the c word as his big gun in an argument, that the word would lose it's impact.
7:11 am
Uneaixoise
Congrats Liz!!
7:11 am
Lizlin
Thanks - enjoy your days.
7:11 am
sukee
I definitely see it more often on the internet now, for both men and women.
7:13 am
jwr again
That's part of its flexibility.Language is a function of culture - it changes as we change. Once upon a time (not so long ago - in my grandparents late 19th Century way - English was taught globally from the same texts. Since then, it has adapted increasingly to the cultures it expresses.
7:16 am
MollyL
There is a generation that is still offended by the f word, yet it is used on most cable TV programming.
7:18 am
mattygroves
Indeed. And whilst I'm not, I wouldn't use it in a job interview, for example
7:19 am
marilyn992
It's not used in polite conversation though, so you don't see it on network TV. There are certain boundaries.
7:19 am
jwr again
True, Molly. And it goes both ways. Any word can become offensive if it is attached to something a majority of people dislike. After all, Nazi was originally just the name of a political party.
7:22 am
jwr again
Marilyn, that's the point: "polite" conversation differs among generations, for instance ... and it changes rapidly these days.
7:23 am
mattygroves
And it differs between countries, even those that share a common language. In the UK, I can ask, even in the poshest of restaurants, where the toilet is. Most Americans, I think, would use a euphemism. Bathroom, rest room, ladies' room etc
7:24 am
mattygroves
People at my brother's wedding in Baltimore in the 90s found it hilarious to get my seven year old daughter to say 'wanker' - a reasonably naughty word here in the UK, but a rather silly word in the US
7:25 am
mattygroves
And don't even get me started on the difference between the meaning of the word 'fanny'
7:25 am
Dorens
Remember when the term "you suck" connoted fellatio? It was considered extremely rude.
7:25 am
jwr again
American (that is, the English spoken int the U.S.) uses more euphemisms than any other. We're a nation of prudes ... or it looks that way to others.
7:26 am
hokie carla
I noticed in Canada it is washroom. where I'm from in the Appalachians we call it a commode but would still use restroom in a restaurant.
7:26 am
sukee
Well, I usually say bathroom.
7:27 am
hokie carla
hmm, maybe it was just banff area
7:27 am
Dorens
But we rarely use it for the bath. I wonder why we can't say the toilet?
7:28 am
MollyL
I thought y'all UK people said "loo"
7:28 am
Vicuna
Toilet is the exact same euphemism, just a century older. It comes from French for dressing gown.
7:29 am
hokie carla
wanker is a solid word, I need to use it more
7:29 am
Vicuna
I should say 16th or 17th century French.
7:29 am
mattygroves
We say 'loo,' 'bog', 'khazi' etc, depending on the person, audience and level of (semi) vulgarity ;)
7:29 am
Dorens
true vicuna, but for the last couple of centuries it means the receptacle of our bodily waste
7:30 am
jwr again
My mother, born in '05, used the word "shit" for the first time -- aloud, anyway -- in 1995 on. It became a family joke. Her father had told her that once she turned 90, she could say whatever she wanted. Like the doctor telling you that after you had your tonsils out, you could have all the ice cream you wanted. It wasn't supposed to happen.
7:30 am
MollyL
When Canadians ask where is the washroom in America, they often get directed to a laundry room.
: D
7:31 am
Vicuna
Yes, but by the same argument, bathroom doesn't mean [just] the room where we take baths. It means the room in which we evacuate our bodily wastes.
7:31 am
jwr again
Never heard the word "khazi" -- where does that come from?
7:31 am
MollyL
And there are people in the Northeast regions of America who don't know what commode means.
7:31 am
mattygroves
I have no idea, jwr! But you do hear it. The internet (a word NOT accepted by Babble) should be able to tell us!
7:31 am
hokie carla
I read a travel blog post once by an Irish girl who was complaining that Americans overuse "awesome" and said it doesn't mean what we think it means. I would argue the same is true for UK use of "brilliant".
7:32 am
MollyL
True, and we are not usually "resting" in the restroom.
7:32 am
jwr again
great example carla
7:32 am
jwr again
And we won't get into "gay."
7:32 am
MollyL
Awesome and brilliant are way over used in those respective places.
7:33 am
mattygroves
When I was a child, I thought rest rooms were for resting! Mind you, I also thought signs you saw on the highway that read 'littering: $100 fine' meant that it was fine to litter $100 bills.
7:33 am
hokie carla
So true, Molly. There are a lot of things I say that people in the Northeast have no idea what I mean. :D
7:33 am
hokie carla
Haha, that is awesome and brilliant, matty.
7:33 am
MollyL
And yet every Christmas, we all sing about donning our gay apparel. Fa la la la la.
7:33 am
bichon
Like "all around Robin Hood's barn
7:34 am
mattygroves
"All of a sudden." What the hell is a sudden when it's a home?!
7:34 am
MollyL
I had a friend from Big Stone Gap,VA who introduced me to commode and several other terms I had never heard before.
7:35 am
hokie carla
I grew up in the county next to BSG
7:35 am
MollyL
I'll take all of A sudden over all of THE sudden any day.
7:35 am
jwr again
On awesome and brilliant applied to common behavior does "ruin" the words for their once-upon-a-time special use: I think it's such a shame.
7:35 am
MollyL
My friend's daughter used to refer to it as Flintstone Country. : D
7:36 am
hokie carla
well, they're not that behind the times
7:36 am
mattygroves
I hate it when people qualify 'unique' - as in 'very unique'. Unique means 'one of a kind' and so it is literally a unique word. When qualifying it, you dilute its meaning to 'very uncommon or rare' and there are already words for that
7:36 am
bichon
I'm with you matty
7:36 am
MollyL
I almost cried while laughing when she referred to a little girl's private parts as her "pee-tom".

Current theory in linguistics is a relationship between accents (particularly tonally) and location, such as level prairie land producing flat (objectively, not an insult) tones, and mountainous regions calling for more variation, as in Yorkshire.
