I have tried to teach myself Spanish 3 different times and can read it fairly well, but immersion is the best way. My dad used to be a Spanish teacher and offered to converse with me and we never really did. Now his mind isn't great. Also tried with a parent on the soccer team and my mind just blanked. :D

There's a podcast I listened to for a while called Coffee Break Spanish, and it's a Scottish guy, so you get that accent doing Spanish. He does Spain Spanish with the lisp and the other differences but will usually tell how it is in Latin America Spanish as well.
