I went to a pound, of sorts, with my friend and her husband to adopt a dog. It reminded me of a junkyard setting, but not messy. the dogs were all in these stacks of cages but you couldn't see the dogs until the front cover of the cages lifted up. They had a specific dog in mind, but then ended up seeing another dog they fell in love with. The dog had been addicted to heroin and was rehabbed. That was the one they selected. GO....

Ok..let me give you the background. Her mother just died. Her extended family (uncle and stepfather) did not tell her until after her mother had passed, so she did not get to say good bye. They even told her that she and her family would have to wait in the parking lot while they went in the funeral home for the 10-person service. She is the only child her mother had. There are years of manipulative and hurtful behavior from that extended family. Someone close to her told her to play nice at the funeral. There would be other opportunities to confront them in this process (will, etc.)

Hello! I don't even comment here, but since you asked. There is a stark difference between those who are rioting and those who are protesting. Those protesting, (including me 3 times this week, very peacefully) are focused on much, much more than just the arrest of one officer, but a systemic and continuously entrenched racist approach to policing. It goes to the disparity in the legal system, education and even health. There is so much to unpack here. As a black woman, not one day goes by without me experiencing racism either directly or indirectly. We can never turn it off. Whether its finding ourselves counted out in the workplace, being labeled "as not as good as", or even having to worry about our sons and daughters just being human in America. The protests are not limited to just one finite thing, but years and years of constant reminders that there are more obstacles for us, then others.

and just to paint a pic, not all the protestors are young. I'm an established executive, with a healthy slice of the American dream, well into my 40s. I locked hands with those even older than me this weekend. Many of these young folks helped us older folks to get the courage to be vocal in a different way. I work hard to bring other black and brown people along at work and in my community. It felt very cathartic to chant and kneel. Since I was girl, the pain sometimes, just makes you, like Marvin said "wanna holla"

I have a very colorful family. I cherish each background, upbringing and vibrant culture each of them brings. See me and black woman and say, "hello, great to have your unique thoughts, experiences and background at the table!"

I was raised color blind but realized that was a rejection of people who are different than I am. Not my goal.

i believe that most police forces need to have real education for their cops about how to greet the public. Even as a white person, they come across so rough and tough and scarey most of the time. They view all people as criminals. In their heads we are all guilty until proven innocent. And sometimes the police women are even worse........
11:16 am
misstearweus
I do the same with others.
11:17 am
jmcnrick
mkg there was an extensive study in the 1970s that said just that--training made all the difference. But almost no police departments do more than a perfunctory training.
11:17 am
mkg
what i mean by color blind is that we see people as individuals and not anything else. that is how i go through life. and each person should be totally valued for who and what they are.
11:18 am

thanks for listening, as I think this movement is what its all about. Less hostility, more listening and more understanding. I do love the open dialogue that I have with my friends and family. I have bi-racial nieces and nephews that I want to make sure I live up to the promise our family unions have created.

11:22 am

roru, now its just being exposed due to phone cameras. Those of us who live it everyday really don't see it as worse. Now there is more proof to show the rest of the world. For every Aubery, there are hundreds that go unreported and swept under the rug do to the good old boy network.

We live in an area where there are very few coloured folk, yet we also have police brutality. It stems from frustration with "slap on the wrist" judges as well growing misconduct among the population. I don't think police training should be confined to racial attitudes. As I have said before, a good start would be to weed out the bullies before they even get into the law enforcement schools.
11:23 am

In December I was on a cruise ship. I bought a tix for the slide, but it was closed. Went the next day, new white attendant. He said I had to buy a tix. I told him I got one the day before. He demanded he see it. I stepped out of line and the white family behind me said the same thing. He let them go on by. Meanwhile I had to trek back to my room to show him my tix. Same thing happened each time I went to access the VIP section of the boat, which I paid for. I'd get stopped, have to show my credentials. White families, just breezed on through. I can go on and on...this is the reality of some many black people.
11:31 am

what can help is when you see it happening, say something! I see my white sister in laws, exhausting themselves doing it. I sometimes have to tell them, it's OK to take a break from it, somedays, I just don't have the energy. What they say? "My son (or daughter) will be seen as black when they grow up, and I can't stand knowing they will be treated this way." When you intervene, it says, no it's not OK for me to be granted access with ease, while you deny others.

11:42 am
helenkeller
what's the message you're getting ?
11:42 am
rururocks
we need more powerful white people to speak up we need a president to say this isn't ok and black lives matte
11:42 am
misstearweus
agreed. The rioting hurts my heart, because for the 1000th time, the focus goes to they are violent, restless destructive people, further perpetuating the idea that black people have to be policed differently.
11:43 am
misstearweus
Takes away from the vast majority of the peaceful protesting.
11:44 am
helenkeller
Interesting. The message I'm seeing is that law enforcement needs better education and also more hands-on mental health, more anger management screening, more psych screening to start with.
11:44 am

the message I'm getting Helen is that things have not changed, that this racism is everywhere and people are dying.

Then we start to have a conversation. I feel so bad for these elderly people who remember The March on Washington & what the vibe was then.

11:48 am
helenkeller
True, people need to look at all other people by how they comport themselves, not by anything else.
11:49 am
misstearweus
helen, I'm with you. I've been there. so many kids black and white have attitudes and bad ones. They can be a nuisance and even threatening. I move away from them, ready for the ride to be over. I do not however, believe they should be mistreated by the police.

I wish that would do more good than it does. I remember being on a walking tour in London. I had been talking with a another woman that was on the tour when a man from New Orleans sat down with us. I asked him about the reconstruction (this was following Katrina) and he replied that it was all done. I said I had just read the previous that there was a huge section of the city where the debris hadn't even been picked up yet and so assumed it was an old report. His reply was "oh no -- we don't care if those areas ever get cleaned up. We don't want those people back. AT which point I got up and escused myself saying I didn't wish to sit with bigots and went to the next table where my husband was sitting with another couple who we had earlier learned were workmates from the Bank of Scotland. The icing on the cake is that one of them was a woman of colour. However when I looked back at the table I had left, the guy just shrugged and turned his back on me.

That is how women's right and male chauvenism was changed over the last half of the the 20th century. We went from girls, broads and little ladies, to women with respect and power.

Another thing that can be changed is education, especially history. The straight out truth needs to be told & taught, not just about America's horrible history, but how the pattern of rich oppressing poor, strong oppressing weak, is a global problem. Kids today don't seem to have any worldliness about themselves.
11:55 am

I'm seeing some backsliding on women's rights
11:56 am

Tab - that's what happens when things start getting taken for granted. Vigilance is what's needed to ensure forward progress.
11:56 am
misstearweus
Agreed. The assault starts early for young black people. The first thing you learn about your history as a kid is, "your ancestors were slaves." Can you wrap your head around the pathology from there? Yes, there was emancipation, but you were in bondage for 300 years. You spend the rest of your education learning more about your contribution and impact on the world.
11:57 am
helenkeller
Try this on for size: My parents were slaves.
11:57 am
misstearweus
me too Tabbycat2, gotta stay vigilant. I was on a conference call the other day. White male leader, called his colleagues wife, "little lady". I growled under my breath.
11:58 am
misstearweus
Helen: and I'm sure that does something to you right? it adds to your fervor to excel, be your best and avoid control at all costs.
12:00 pm
helenkeller
When foreigners come into your country, speaking a foreign language, abduct you, take you back to their country, force you to work for no pay, very little food . . . that's slavery. That's what happened to Poland & other small European nations from the start of WWII. My mother abducted to Germany, my father to Siberia.
12:01 pm
helenkeller
And, yes, it did do something: Exactly what you said. Plus, depression, anxiety . . .
12:03 pm
helenkeller
Human trafficking continues right now. Awareness is the first step. Then pounding in that awareness, so people don't put it on the back burner.
12:03 pm
misstearweus
Agreed. And that's the type of feeling that builds up over time, it can create depression and even hostility. That experience and perspective should be welcomed to the table, and included as part of the American fabric. I miss the value by turning a "colorblind" eye to your experience and lumping it in with all white americans. Instead, I cherish the dialogue and richness it would bring to a project, a conversation and a community.
12:05 pm
misstearweus
white is so many things, black is so many things, asian is so many things, etc. When we open ourselves up to the endless spectrums within those colors and cultures, we really see all the wonderful differences and the endless similarities.

and with that, I have a date with a sandwich and a pop. Happy Babbling ya'll.
12:07 pm
helenkeller
Thanks. So happy you see that. It's hard for me to convince people that I'm not being dismissive of color issues, just that I look at all this from a European perspective, not an American one. I don't feel guilty for the slavery here, I am angry about slavery in other places. It's all the same thing. Some white Americans need to deal with what their ancestry did first.

I read the one of the things religion tries to do is get Man to be less selfish and to have empathy and sympathy. If only religion or anything could imbue man with the empathy gene......i believe women have it in order to nurture their children but many males just dont have much of it. And I know that you will say there are plenty of men who do have it, and I agree: my sons, my husband, my son in laws...etc. but unfortunately there are so so many males who dont have it.....

wondering what people will do when they have to cook a meal for a family. thinking the looters do not have that responsibility.
2:14 pm

even downtown the places that go smashed night before last were a CVS and clothing stores. The IMF and World Bank were untouched. That speaks volumes for who and why looting occured.
2:15 pm
72 Temple Owl
here, they hit food stores and are blowing up ATMs. one guy died doing that.
2:16 pm

the thieves are mainly teenage and young men

I support law enforcement. . .but not one that is geared up like the military. And there is a great deal of evidence that the violence is not related to the anti-racist demonstrators but to White supremacists, some Leftists anarchists, and some people who just see a chance to steal things
4:16 pm
jmcnrick
yesterday, for example, a guy was tearing up bricks from the street to break windows and the demonstrators surrounded him and handed him over to the police.
4:17 pm

Something like this was bound to happen. People are losing their shit over being out of work, having to stay home and having no money to pay their bills. We are not all getting paid to stay home and do nothing.
4:18 pm
mattygroves
Fivethirtyeight.com has an interesting article about this. The whole thing can be read here but a telling paragraph is Researchers have spent 50 years studying the way crowds of protesters and crowds of police behave — and what happens when the two interact. One thing they will tell you is that when the police respond by escalating force — wearing riot gear from the start, or using tear gas on protesters — it doesn’t work. In fact, disproportionate police force is one of the things that can make a peaceful protest not so peaceful. But if we know that (and have known that for decades), why are police still doing it?https://tinyurl.com/ya6ppeuz

From the same article: "Experts say the following decades of research have turned up similar findings. Escalating force by police leads to more violence, not less. It tends to create feedback loops, where protesters escalate against police, police escalate even further, and both sides become increasingly angry and afraid."

I couldn't agree more Mattie. A prime example is Northern Ireland circa 1969. Peaceful Civil Rights protests were quelled. Listen to Nef's advice Harry. Nurses know these things.
8:25 pm

full strength peroxide is too caustic to allow the wound to heal.
8:26 pm
hokie carla
interesting, I did not know that. I did used to love watching the fizzing when I was a kid, so welki is onto something.
8:26 pm
Nef
Hi ori and hokie. How are you guys anyway?

8:31 pm
welki
my father would put it on fresh wounds/scrapes just to clean them out - maybe if it was used more often, there would have been bad results
8:31 pm
origami
It's the protests here hokie
8:31 pm
Nef
we have a curfew here too; and it seems to help now (especially with the National Guard here). I don't understand why people think they won't be arrested after curfew; but at the site of George Floyd's death, they are allowing all night vigils.
8:31 pm
hokie carla
we are having protests too but haven't heard about a curfew
8:32 pm
welki
ori - that's so off the mark hokie. we have the same problems as you, but not as big of a population, so it doesn't make the headlines
8:32 pm
origami
My mother always doused every wound liberally with peroxide until a doctor told her not to use it on puncture wounds because it impedes healing.
8:32 pm
hokie carla
I think more accurately it's due to the rioting, not the protests
8:33 pm
Nef
welki, it still fizzes with half strength now. I have found that there are different strengths of it these days; maybe all peroxide was a lower strength back then?
8:33 pm
origami
Yes, sorry. I stand corrected. I shouldn't have used the term "protest." It is, indeed, the rioting.
8:33 pm
welki
that's what i'm thinking, nef - or we'd all be walking wounds :)
8:34 pm
Nef
LOL! Very true, welki.
8:34 pm

8:34 pm

I think once it stopped fizzing we stopped using it
8:34 pm
welki
yep, because then it was "clean" - very scientific :D

lol, I am in a dark movie room and struggling to read this chat, so I didn't even see that, welki
8:35 pm

Nef
Ori, there are different people involved in the protests (which have all been peaceful here & made up of local multiracial people who seem to know each othe; and the rioters; who were white (but not all from out of state as originally reported). Then there were the looters; mostly blacks, and (as someone said) taking advantage of the opportunity.
8:37 pm
hokie carla
and in case that wasn't clear, I'm struggling to read because I need readers :D

Oh, great! One of the fireworks seasons is upon us here. This one starts around June 1 and goes until July 15 or so. And fireworks that are illegal almost eveerywhere else are legal here. And lots of illegal ones are used also. One of my dogs gets freaked out.

ugh. my dog, who's 3, hasn't started freaking out with storms or fireworks yet.

I saw that on your profile (but my son is ruining my game and chat here by going on about the current situation here)

Hokie - My dog is a 95 lb black and tan coonhound. They are bred to hunt bear and mountain lion and she is afraid of the dishwasher, the roomba, slippery floors and fireworks.

Mine is a golden ret. named Winston and he is scared of so many things we call him Wimpston.

Our friends have a rhodesian ridgeback, which those are bred to fight lions or something and are very large, and he is scared of most everything, incl. grass.

Indeed. I figured you would actually know what a B&T Coonhound is. Most people in CA think she's a big doberman :D

I love hounds! They are so funny and quirky. Lots of personality. One of the many dogs we had when I was growing up was a ridgeback. She was a wonderful dog.

Back. Lori, does a B&T coonhound "look" like a doberman> My daughter has a B&T dog that I thought was a cross between a German Shephard and a doberman; and she weighs about 100 lbs and is very quirky.

I have been thinking about a beagle when my very old dogs pass on. Sounds ghoulish, but I really need a dog in my life.

The do look a little like a natural doberman (without ear and tail cropping). I'll send you a picture on FB, Nef.

Thanks. Whitney if very intelligent ;but she's so funny weird in so many ways that I know it isn't the GS side of her making her do the things she does.

Dobies can be quirky/funny too. We had a couple of those when I was growing up and I really liked them. Wonderful dogs. Very easily trained and incredibly loyal.

Googling them, Whitney's colors are exactly the opposite of what's pictured, and she has more of the GS ears ,but her face isn't right; it's too long for a GS.

I would get a dobie, actually, when these guys go, but I really need a smaller dog. I'm getting older and my back is shot and it is very hard to get either of them in the car. I need to downsize.

She looks more like a doberman in color; her ears & tail aren't cropped. Her other dog is a cross between a bulldog and a pit bull; both of them are rescues. Whitney will growl to scold Korv if Korv jumps up on the fence to say hi or barks for no reason.
