Our school district is going to attempt in person - but the honest hope is just that we can get 2-3 weeks in before we go back to virtual. This will allow teachers a chance to connect with the students and also to show them how virtual instruction will actually work. I think we all realize it will be virtual sooner or later

Molly, both storms skated by us with no adverse outcomes but Louisiana got slammed. I think this was their worst hurricane, ever (definitely near the top of the list, anyway). I looked at it yesterday and it was just growing (like Katrina did). I'm sure much damage but have not heard of any fatalities, I think a lot of folks evacuated. I'm sure Texas took their share but the NE side of the storm is where all of the power is at, NW usually winds and rain. I'm sure we'll be hearing about damage once the dang thing subsides (think still Cat 2 going thru LA? unless my info is outdated).

Also, our kids went back to school Aug 6th, masks and distancing required all day. They do a temp check upon school entry and get sent home if running fever. Naturally, there will be a case here or there but so far, so good. We also have the shipyard here (which employs 20K folks from LA to FL and a couple of counties north of the coast, not to mention the contractors that come in from other states) and trust me when I tell you, those folks working in 110+ heat are not going to wear a mask all day. They also get heat scanned when they walk through the gate/into the offices and denied access if running temp.

Molly, Katrina's eye hit Hancock County, MS, at category 5 contrary to popular belief. LA was on the NW side of her. NOLA's ill maintained levees broke, which is what caused the flooding there (the city is below sea level, after all). Google MS gulf coast after Katrina images if you want a visual. NOLA got all of the attention because they were the ones crying about it, MS folks pulled up the bootstraps and started clearing roads, helping friends, neighborhood feeds (everyone who wasn't flooded lost power so freezers needed to be emptied), doing everything we could to help others. I have quite a few friends who basically had to rebuild their homes because of flooding due to storm surge (which, by the way, insurance fought saying they didn't have wind/flood insurance (because it wasn't a requirement for the sea level they are at) and wouldn't rule it as storm surge). My heart goes out to the LA/TX folks over Laura, we still have areas along the coast that haven't recovered, I know they're going to still be feeling the aftereffects 15+ year from now. (Katrina's 15 year anniversary is Saturday) Oh, and no connection with anyone locally, problems with cell towers, but we could text people in other states, lol. Good times.

Bad thing about the levees was that there had been a ton of research because of their age on what would happen with a large storm (I want to say some were written in the '70s but I can't find them, now, imagine that) and recommendations to the Corp of Engineers that they needed to update the existing ones... No one listened.
