it was both - he had been "breaking down" (his phrase) in a few ways for the last couple years, but the final emergency was unexpected. But it gave him the time needed with my mom to make his wishes known and make sure she could handle finances etc. He had Christmas at home, which was a blessing

when I was in grad school, there w4ere 4 of us who had this construction paper bus that we could "put people on" if they hurt us/dissed us (good for stoopid boy/girlfriends AND profs). Once you were on the bus, you couldn't really ever get off. The best you could do would be to get stuck in the bus shelter,
