I think it's more a money thing, honestly. They had a separate Potato Head for those two genders. I can imagine it's a logistical nightmare. It probably makes more sense for the company to just make one general Potato Head, but it includes the parts to make both of said genders.

If it's just a potato, it hardly matters if it's Mr Potato Head or just Potato Head - kids who play with it now or who get it soon won't know or care that it was once Mr - it's only those of us with a nostalgia that care about how things were - the toy will be the same but what is good is that parents and grandparents won't insist on getting the Mr for their boys and the Mrs/Ms for their girls - it can be whatever their imaginations fancy
