Read this about the children's classic "Where The Wild Things Are" : This classic picture book by Maurice Sendak has been challenged for being "too dark," having witchcraft, supernatural elements and a child who yells at his mother. In a 1969 column in Ladies Home Journal, child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim called the book "psychologically damaging for 3- and 4-year-olds." It was banned in many southern states when it was published in 1963 for child abuse (Max being sent to bed without supper).
