I read something the other day to the effect that those born in 1900 suffered through 2 world wars, the korean and vietnam wars, the spanish flu pandemic and a stock market crash that caused hardship and hunger nationwide and still went forward witha "get on with it and enjoy life" attitude. Now these guys think it is a hardship to get a vaccination?

masks, vaccinations, they reject them both for the same lame reasons. In Japan they've worn masks forever, well before this virus, and don't mind them at all, they know it helps everyone else.
11:42 am
mab
it's interesting. I do think, though, that at some point in life you start looking for what you yourself believe - not necessarily leaning on what you thing parents taught you to believe. I sort of hate that 'it's the way i was raised. oh come on.
11:44 am
MollyL
The way I was raised vs, me now are two very different things
11:44 am
dcseain
Yeah, my mom complained that me and my sister turned out different from her philosophically. I pointed out that we grew up in the Washington, DC of the 1970s and 80s, not the Cleveland, Ohio of the 1950s and 60s, so of course we didn't fully align with her.
11:44 am
cybernan
I don't see where you are coming from mab. But then I am probably one of your parents' generation.
11:46 am
cybernan
I see nothing wrong in practicing decency and kindness towards others nor in respecting others rights and needs.
11:46 am

I think mab is saying that the way you raise your kids is not necessarily the way they turn out. Hence the phrase "I didn't raise you to be this way"
11:47 am
rururocks
well I was born this way
11:47 am
mab
I guess that how one's brought up has to be looked at critically in some areas. people need to think for themselves - they are not who their parents are.
11:48 am
MollyL
Ru goes Lady Gaga
11:48 am

11:49 am

but as you point out, nan, sometimes the legacy you leave your kids is good. the kids just have to think it through.
11:49 am
cybernan
I think it is unfortunate that with the economic necessity for most parents to need 2 incomes, today's kids are not receiving the "hands on" parenting of previous generations. Attitudes are learned at a very early age and hard to get rid of -- racism being a prime example.
11:51 am
cybernan
* that was on the bad side -- on the good side children benefit from seeing their parents help others.
11:51 am
MollyL
I think working parents can do a lot of hands on parenting. It's a choice.

11:59 am

I grew up in a small town where your school is an ethnic melting pot and your friends come from all different backgrounds. I guess that is why I am so shocked at the racist violence we see today. Now I know that my parents didn't have close friends of people of different ethnicities and faiths, but they didn't "badmouth" them either and they did belong to the same service clubs and do business with each other.

if mask mandates are dropped, I won't even be able to go shopping anywhere but online and certainly no community events, even outdoors.
2:17 pm

Nan, you can certainly go outdoors if not around people. COVID does not float through the air.
2:17 pm
cybernan
the omicron variant is airborne, Molly
2:18 pm
cybernan
but true I can go out for a walk, but I still don't see or talk to anyone other than virtually.
2:18 pm
Bugsaw
if you have 3 shots nan you are safer. you can wear a mask and keep your distance from others and the omicron won't hit you too hard. It is like a 24 hour flu for those with 3 shots.
2:19 pm

2:19 pm
MollyL
Well if that is true than it will come into your house through your ventilation and you are not safe anywhere.
2:20 pm
mab
nooo, not through the ventilation i don't think.
2:20 pm
MollyL
Why not, if it is airborne?
2:21 pm
mab
i've not heard that's a problem, but for office buildings and schools with people in them. not homes.
2:21 pm
cybernan
It doesn't hang around in the air forever Molly -- you should read up on it. The reason Omicron is spreading faster and more easily than Delta is because it is airborne as opposed to waterborne.
2:21 pm
gingentle
Molly, why don"t you go to the CDC website and educate yourself, rather than depending on tidbits you might glean from here...
2:23 pm
cybernan
yes -- if someone in the building has omicron then it will spread through the ventilation system in a closed environment. That is why the schools are being require to keep windows open where possible and have hepafilters in the classroom and improved filter systems on the furnaces.
2:24 pm
cybernan
it is also why self-distancing is a good idea - even outdoors.
2:25 pm
lyv4ever
infection is dose-dependent. If any virus got into the house from outside it would be at levels too low to infect
2:26 pm

let's all lie down on the train tracks. it's obviously a dreadful disease; i wouldn't want anyone i know to succumb to it - it's horrible. and esp. when it doesn't have to happen with existing protections.
2:35 pm
mab
honestly, shall we stop treating other diseases as well? well, life is short anyway?
2:35 pm
leighprefect
yep, don't treat that breast cancer because i'll eventually die anyway.
2:36 pm
mirandapan
Ah. This conversation brings me out of lurking. My husband is just home from a month in the hospital with COVID. Because he has leukemia, the vaccines were ineffective. He has had monoclonal antibodies and will receive an COVID antigen shot next week. We are very much aware that people die all the time, but this is not the way he wants to die. We are NOT in a constant state of fear, but we're being cautious because of his immune system--and diligent.
2:36 pm
Bugsaw
Nan is doing exactly what she needs to do to keep her husband safe and none of us have any right to judge her which is where this went.
2:38 pm
leighprefect
thank god my 92 yo grandfather was vaccinated, because when he caught COVID a month ago it was bad enough for someone just a week out of heart surgery. without the vaccine he might have been dead.
2:38 pm
ajbns87
That's a pity to read Miranda, ineffective vaccines
2:39 pm
ajbns87
You can't be certain of that Leigh. Lots of people have lots of different symptoms to this strand of the flu
2:40 pm
mab
ineffective immune system due to treatment, not ineffective vaccines.
2:40 pm
ajbns87
Some suffer, some don't even know they have it
2:40 pm
mirandapan
Ineffective for his kind of leukemia, aj. Research just out on that. I also had COVID and, because of my 3 shots, experienced just a cough and tirednes.
2:40 pm
ajbns87
How old are you Miranda?
2:41 pm
leighprefect
ajb- .....what? he had covid, it was confirmed.
2:41 pm
leighprefect
i'm going back to what i was doing. this is a waste of my time.
2:42 pm
lyv4ever
it's statistically proven the vaccine works. you sound like an antivaxxer ajb. over and out.
2:42 pm
ajbns87
That's a good age. God bless you and your husband
2:45 pm
mab
mirandapan, i hope he does well - sounds like he really is. I agree, this is not how to end a long life. best to your family.
2:46 pm
ajbns87
It's also completely unknown what the long term impacts of these mrna vaccines will be, but yes by all means use that label anti vaxxer.
2:47 pm
windingwake
It is not scientifically reasonable to expect long term effects from them, so…yeah. You sound pretty ill-informed.
2:47 pm
mirandapan
Thank you mab. I really would like to have him around for a while yet.
2:48 pm
mab
i feel no happiness when the unvaccinated get ill. good luck to you ajbns. maybe reconsider.
2:48 pm
ajbns87
I'll stay in the control group. Thanks
2:48 pm
MollyL
Someone needs to get a life and stop stalking my every post. As for COVID, everyone needs to do what they believe will keep them and their loved ones the most safe. I get that.
2:49 pm
ajbns87
All scientific experiments need a control group
2:49 pm
mab
just curious - who is stalking your posts? how can you tell?
2:49 pm
windingwake
This isn’t an experiment. It is a pandemic.
2:50 pm
windingwake
Man! How about that bottom-row e? Could I get a clue?
2:50 pm
mab
and the vaccines did have control groups, did they not?
2:51 pm
windingwake
They did, mab
2:51 pm
MollyL
Not you mab
2:51 pm
lyv4ever
the control is the unvaccinated - they die more
2:53 pm
windingwake
No. In an experiment you control for variables like age, health, smoking yes/no. In a pandemic people call themselves “control†when they mean “living reasons my unvaccinated asthmatic son has a limited social life.â€
2:53 pm
mab
please find some proper news outlets ajbns.

3:05 pm
mab
i don't know what's available in wales or the uk at large, really. they exist in numbers i'd guess.
3:06 pm
ajbns87
I'm lucky enough to live largely off grid, what Mark Drakeford rules bares little impact largely
3:06 pm
rolin
mab...unfortunately Wales and the UK is flooded with Murdoch tripe....much as the rest of the world

Weird how the world changes through fear mongering. You can see how wars get voted for.
3:08 pm
mab
mmm.. not sure that's the case at all, at all. you might check murdoch's holdings. then steer clear, for a start.
3:08 pm
rolin

There are people who believe that everything the government and government agencies put out is propaganda. Hence, the big division between vaccine lovers and vaccine haters.
3:10 pm
mab
wars, sars cov-2? not seeing a connection. but someone's told you that so it must be true.
3:10 pm
rolin
how is it fear mongering??? I dont live in fear... I live with caution... its like looking both ways before crossing the road... i could just stroll out onto the highway willy nilly... buy I choose to exercise caution before doing so
3:10 pm
rururocks
You are talking like a fool AJBS.. I hope you avoid catching covid. Here in California we call unvaccinated people covidiots or vaxxholes

3:16 pm
mab
ajbns, if you survive you'll have a limited degree of immunity. i hope you don't get it. meanwhile read up on the role of the uninoculated and the evolution of mutations in the virus.
