hello -- feeling a little stunned this morning as I assume you are also. I don't really want to see a war, but I don't think the west can allow Putin to continue on this path he has established. He got away with Crimea, if we let him get away with Ukraine -- who will be next? I also have to think -- what if another country was invading us and the the rest of the world just sat back and said "we'll apply sanctions"?

There are millions of immigrant Russian Jews in the U.S. and Israel. Some people stay because it's their home. Would you leave your home if your neighbors didn't like you? Some people do, others stay.
12:56 pm
ch1212
bichon, perhaps you meant to phrase that differently. It's akin to saying, why don't Italians in the U.S. or elsewhere give up their citizenship and move back to Italy? Or why don't black people around the world all move to Africa? Or for that matter, why don't the white supremacists in the U.S. all move back to their original immigrant countries?
Discounting other's rights because they have a different skin color or practice a different religion has a long history among us humans. But tiny, baby steps by tiny, baby steps I want to believe we're slowly breaking away from that behavior.
1:03 pm
dan2bit
people want to feel safe. they don't want to feel singled out or suspected without proof. Some people have the wherewithal to change locations to pursue that happiness, some don't. When people are forced to relocate for safety, that's tragic.
1:05 pm
bichon
Most of my family in Romania died by the Nazi's. Some of them finally got permission to move to Israel. They led a wonderful life there.

That makes your original statement make sense, bichon. And like dan wrote, it's tragic that anyone should have to relocate because of their beliefs or other differences.

Very interesting discussion everyone. Much to think about in our discussion. The real question is should nato nations fight back against the russian invasion? This is what is the most urgent question in my mind. And will sanctions make a difference to russia? It seems like they wont make a difference. And if russia has china on their side, then does it matter what the u.sl does? Difficult times.
1:11 pm
crosshair
Very difficult. Sanctions are one thing but soldiers from Nato countries on the ground, in the Ukraine, shooting Russian soldiers would escalate things to a point where the world does not want to go just yet.
1:12 pm
joym999
well said, ch1212 and dan2bit. Being exiled from your country is an adventure for some, but a heartbreak for most and a tragedy for many.
1:13 pm
joym999
you're right, crosshair. OTOH, Russia has no right, etc. OTOH, do we want to start WWIII?
1:14 pm
crosshair
And that is the crux of the situation--how far to take it.
1:14 pm
ch1212
mkg, I read an interesting opinion piece in the NY Times yesterday, written by a Ukranian. He pointed out that Ukraine wasn't actually at the table with all those other nations discussing what their response should be. He went on to say, the Ukraine doesn't need other countries stepping in with boots on the ground. The Ukraine needs other countries to help them fight their own war.
I have spent my life watching the major industrialized countries like the U.S. and Russia fight perceived enemies --- always on someone else's soil. And always 'for their own good.' I know that sounds simple and naive, but I wish the U.S. and Russia and China would each appoint a representative to fight in an arena once a year, and stay out of everyone else's countries. I know.... naive.

hi again. I hope all of you listened to the recent broadcasts by Johnson, Biden and Trudeau. I am glad to see unity there between countries and in the case of Britain and CAnada within the country. Exactly, cybernan, were the Ukraine full of the most vile representation of the human species, still the world could not allow it to be bombed and taken over by Russia. Because Putin would not stop there.
1:23 pm
AtlKru
its unfortunate. putin will not stop with Ukraine. it is its own sovereign nation. putin wants to reunite the former soviet union. he's willing to use all the weapons in his arsenal. he has no regard for human life. if it devolved to a world war, the us would be fighting on 3 fronts minimum. this is quite disturbing.
1:25 pm

Then there are these uncomfortable truths:
Ukraine declared itself independent of Russia in 1991.
In 2014, there was the Crimean crisis, when a disputed referendum (majority) in the south of Ukraine wanted to stay with Russia. There has been fighting ever since, with Russian and the factioned Ukrainian forces. More than 14,000 have died. Yes, Russia recently amped up their attacks. But the Russian-Ukranian war has been in play since 2014.

There are lots of variables: just think, if Russia wanted, they could invite all loyal Ukrainian Russians to walk across the border back to mother Russia, wait a week, the hit it with a hydrogen bomb. All living creatures would die, but all infrastructure would remain intact for future use, and any radiation would die off in a few months. The world must tread carefully.

1:54 pm

good point nan, but it's kind of sad that basically the way we can help is just by not being a jerk, like so many people mouthing off on social media about gasoline prices, blaming Biden, and just pretending to be an expert.
