not seeing that tr 8-9 - don't think it can be a common word.
12:32 am
CowExploder
depends on the city you live in. the first part is common and then comes the suffix
12:33 am
cybernan
I just assumed it was something tripled, but I don't live in a large city -- 240k
12:34 am
CowExploder
it's nothing tripled
12:35 am
cybernan
don't know then - don't see anything relating to a city either
12:36 am

you probably already have the tr5 root

Ours did. 64, beautiful and trees blooming everywhere.
1:14 pm
MollyL
Y'all Canadians don't get Spring until June, right?
1:18 pm

not quite -- we will be having a heat wave in may probably. Cherry trees are blooming in Vancouver, but colder than normal today -- tulips up about 6" but no buds yet - crocus about to burst.

the French really throws me for a loop
2:29 pm
cybernan
I'm ok with french usually, but not latin, greek, japanese, german and spanish
2:30 pm
cybernan
missing your sunflower, sophie
2:31 pm
Gillie
English borrows from other languages so extensively that it's very difficult to decide what is still a foreign word and what has been integrated.
2:32 pm
cybernan
I think latin is pretty obvious seeing as how it is a dead language
2:34 pm
Gillie
If there is no alternative word for it in English, then basically qualifies as English.
2:36 pm
cybernan
I don't agree -- latin is latin
2:37 pm
MollyL
That is funny. Latin is a dead language, yet it is used quite a bit in medicine, landscaping and The Catholic Church. 😊
2:37 pm
cybernan
not only that, in this game 1/2 words count as words
2:37 pm
MollyL
I agree Nan, Latin is Latin.
2:39 pm
Gillie
And "manic" is Greek (ancient Greek)
2:42 pm
cybernan
I think that is because roman society was much more knowledgeable than the rest of europe (except maybe Tuscany and Greece) in those fields of study -- ie first scholar to discover something gets to name it
2:42 pm
MollyL
Waldeinsamkeit is a German word that means "the feeling of solitude and connectedness to nature when being alone in the woods". That doesn't make it Ebglish.
2:43 pm
MollyL
Argh, doesn't make it English just because there is no English word for it.
2:43 pm
cybernan
Let face it .... England was kind of backward compared to the Mediterranean and Arab countries in those days
2:44 pm
Gillie
Unless the English decide they need a word for it, and decide to borrow it. And actually, all languages that interact have been borrowing from each other for a long time.
2:45 pm
Gillie
In French, the word for "shampoo" is "shampooing", which is taken by the English from Turkish.
2:46 pm
cybernan
that's just it, gillie --- the words are borrowed or adopted, not english
2:46 pm
Gillie
You think "shampoo" is not English?
2:46 pm
Gillie
"Shampooing" is definitely French.
2:50 pm
cybernan
yes -- but only because it has been in common useage by most of the population for a long time. Medical terms and latin names for plants are not in usage my most of the english speaking people.
2:51 pm
Gillie
I'm sure they are in common usage by medical professionals, if only because there is no alternative. Basically, you're saying you don't like words that aren't familiar to you.
2:52 pm
cybernan
no, I am saying I don't think words that are not English or are specific to a discipline practiced by a small percentage of the population belong here.
2:53 pm
cybernan
the latin name for heart is not english
2:53 pm
Gillie
Let's put it this way - they qualify as English if they need to go into an English dictionary.
2:54 pm
dcseain
cor is too short anyway
2:54 pm
Gillie
No, because we have a name for heart. But many anatomical words don't have pre-existing English names.
2:56 pm
aslindy
this is the longest day ever.
2:56 pm
cybernan
we're going in circles, gillie -- think we need to agree to disagree and call it quits.

I work for the Govt. The Coroners Service. I was Soooooo much more productive at home. And during the height of the pandemic, I was working 7 days a week, because, sadly, the death rate was so high. I was operating really well (bra-less & lipstick-less) from home.
4:48 pm
joym999
that's sad, soodle.
4:49 pm
joym999
the deaths I mean, not your bra and lipsticklessness

Soodle
Truth be told, Joy, that was a bit sad too. 🤪
4:51 pm

I work for the govt too, but I think we won't ever have to go back to the office full time. They've realized that they can save a lot of rent money if we're not all in the office.

My gripe is.... I functioned perfectly well working from home. The bereaved of Ireland were given a decent service. Now I have to pay exorbitant diesel (gas) prices to get to an office where I’ll spend more time at the water cooler, gossiping & chatting, than at my desk. Crazy stuff
4:54 pm

Working from home, I tumble out of bed @ 8.50. Sitting at my ‘puter @ 9.00. (Wearing PJ’s). If I have a Zoom call, I’ll do the hair & make-up thing wear something respectable from the waist up. Days in the office - up @ 7.00. Shower. Hair business. Make-up. Sundry household chores. Leave house 8.30. Negotiate traffic. Arrive in office 9.15. Go to kitchen & make coffee, meet assorted colleagues, shoot the breeze, working day starts @ 10.00, then tea-break @ 11.00 sheesh
