A lot of my friends are book editors and I've done a bit of it myself. But there are 4 levels of book editing - Copy Editing. Copy editing is the most common (and most necessary) type of editing.
There is also Developmental Editing. Developmental editing includes co-ordinating and overseeing a project from start to finish.
There is also Substantive Editing and just plain Proofreading. Some types of editing cost more than others.
