I just read this about why American words have less vowels than Brit words (color/colour, etc) Back in the olden days in America, postal letters used to be charged per letter. So Americans decided to take out certain letters they deemed unnecessary to the contribution of the meaning of the word. (So the “u” in color and favorite, the “o” in diarrhea, etc) Does anyone know if this is true?

I listened to a podcast recently about this. The "expert" they talked to did not mention a postal connection. I can't remember if she said the Americans spelled them and then the Brits added the superfluous vowels to be fancy or if they kept them to be fancier than the Americans.
