mael, I agree. What's disheartening is statistically, there is simply no substantial evidence of children being harmed by strangers while they are out and about. The chances are so tiny as to be insignificant. Yet between the media and the narrative that we live in a terrible country of violence, parents have bought into it. Facts are, violence has been steadily decreasing in the past 50 years. It was far more dangerous for a kid to be out on their own in the 70's than today. For example, I'm not going to submit my kiddo to potentially traumatizing fear of being abducted while getting off the school bus, but I am going to foster open communication about harassment and sexual abuse, which is almost 1000x more likely to happen to my child before they reach the age of 18. I'm also going to train my kid how to safely navigate through the world, such as crossing the street, etc. At a certain point, common sense comes into play.
