FWs...last word to 6, the fruit
6:18 am

is that TO a fruit or a veggie?
6:42 am

Technically a fruit. But you probably wouldn't put it in a fruit salad.

I still don't know why I lived most of my life thinking a to6 was a vegetable. I feel deceived. 😊
7:25 am

that whole thing is... really quite a mess tho
7:26 am
hurshy
what's considered a "vegetable" depends on whether you are talking about like classifications from biology or cookery or something else
7:42 am
Jeff7
Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304 (1893), was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that, under U.S. customs regulations, the tomato should be classified as a vegetable rather than a fruit.[1] The Court's unanimous opinion held that the Tariff Act of 1883 used the ordinary meaning of the words "fruit" and "vegetable," instead of the technical botanical meaning.
7:43 am
Jeff7
I consider it a fruit though :)
7:43 am
hurshy
ah Jeff, what a fount of information you are
7:43 am

I think a tomato is really a fruit, but classified as a vegetable

they're all over the place. Our first day was last wednesday, a half day, then thursday, friday off, monday off, back today. Why they don't just start after labor day is beyond me
9:40 am

that's a northern thing
9:40 am
MollyL
No, it is actually northern to start the day after labor day. That is the way it was for years.
9:40 am

When I was a kid we started the day after Labor Day and were done by the first of june. Now it seems the school year is at least 4 weeks longer. So many "in service" days and half days.
9:41 am

yeah, that's what I was referring to
9:41 am

Yep, Origami. Summer was a full three months long.
9:42 am
mael
we get a half day every wednesday district wide and it's bananas
9:42 am
mael
how are parent supposed to deal with that is anyone's guess
9:42 am
MollyL
Half day once a week is very difficult for parents who work.
9:43 am
MollyL
Although, since COVID a lot of households have gone back to one parent staying at home.
9:44 am
mael
not in my experience, lots of households have just had to scramble with one parent working at home some of the time
9:44 am
MollyL
We have had a lot of daycare centers close due to lack of enrollment.
9:44 am
mael
up here they've closed due to lack of staffing

the waitlists for daycares are years long at this point
9:45 am

9:45 am

most parents scramble and use nannies, grandparents, or work with the kids in the house if they can
9:45 am
rururocks
I went my whole life without a nannie
9:46 am
rururocks
and pretty much parents too
9:46 am
MollyL
I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who can afford nannies.
9:46 am
mael
it does, when there's school. the problem is you still have to work even if the kids are home, including those half days and the random "professional development days" and all the mondays we get off of school because it's a holidya but not a bank holiday

9:49 am

They should call the cops. Young children do not belong unsupervised in a car.
9:50 am
mael
toddlers don't
9:50 am
mael
an 8 year old? of course they can hang out in a car
9:50 am
hokie carla
my mom went back to work when I started kindergarten but I have 2 older bros so I don't remember exactly when I was alone.
9:52 am
MollyL
In our state, 8 is the cut off age. You can't leave a child younger than 8 in a car or home alone.
9:52 am
mael
I was unsupervised all day in the summer from age 6 onwards, we just all played together. We'd call our parents at lunch and dinner to make sure we had someplace to be (usually a friend's house) but there was... very little parental involvement. We used to go to the grocery store by ourselves by then, never mind hang out in a car with an ipad for 15 minutes
9:53 am
rururocks
my parents would leave us on a Friday to go gambling in Reno and come back on Mondays

9:57 am

and trust me, i've got a 6 year old and an 8 year old. Some things are different. I wouldn't be able to let them roam our neighborhood because it's not a safe street for bikes
9:57 am
hokie carla
I tried to not do that. made them start doing laundry at like 8th grade, made them go to the dr by themselves in high school, etc.
9:57 am
mael
but the fact that I can't even leave them in a car to pop in to the hardware store? that's RIDICULOUS
9:58 am
rururocks
i get it.. but it can be dangerous in many areas
9:59 am
mael
of course, but we can't generalize
9:59 am
rururocks
i agree
9:59 am
rururocks
you need a couple nannies mael :D
10:00 am
mael
it's not that I can't take them in with me, it's just that they need to learn independence
10:00 am
mael
my kids aren't even allowed to walk off the bus onto our driveway and the house without an adult present
10:01 am
MollyL
Why not leave them home then?
10:02 am
mael
because if anything were to happen, even smallest of incidents, I could have my kids taken away by CPS. That's the reality these days.
10:05 am
MollyL
All kids learn independence eventually. It is debatable how young that learning needs to happen.
10:05 am
mael
we've created a system that keeps children "safe" at the expense of their development. And of course no one wants 7 year old routinely left alone, but there is a progression that they're not allowed to undertake. Walking to the store alone? Getting themselves off the bus? That's how you slowly push their boundaries. If you can't do that at all then you can't prepare your kids for when they will be able to do so
10:06 am
mael
all kids is what's debatable. There are plenty of kids in college who are functionally still children at this point
10:06 am
MollyL
Sadly, the rules are in place because kids have been abducted walking home from school and getting off the bus. Sometimes, by a non-custodial parent.
10:07 am
mael
abductions are not less frequent now than they were in the 80s
10:07 am
rururocks
yeah.. but you don't want your kid to be one of them
10:08 am
rururocks
it's so much different now than the way I grew up
10:08 am
MollyL
I believe that the laws that are in place are there for the safety of the kids.
10:08 am
mael
I don't believe that it is much different, is the thing
10:09 am
ch1212
mael, I agree. What's disheartening is statistically, there is simply no substantial evidence of children being harmed by strangers while they are out and about. The chances are so tiny as to be insignificant. Yet between the media and the narrative that we live in a terrible country of violence, parents have bought into it. Facts are, violence has been steadily decreasing in the past 50 years. It was far more dangerous for a kid to be out on their own in the 70's than today. But you know ... facts are such an inconvenience!
10:09 am
mael
kidnappers existed in the 80s, so did pedophiles and murderers, as well as non-custodial parents with a grudge. They were rare, just as they are rare now
10:10 am
rururocks
yeah...but nowadays some of those pedophiles make it to congress
10:11 am
mael
and we should deal with them in congress, by tossing their asses in jail where they belong
10:12 am
MollyL
You guys should do a little research on the number of abducted kids in the 80's vs today.
10:12 am
rururocks
I am with you 100% mael
10:13 am
rururocks

10:13 am
mael
a lot of what was reported as kidnappings in the 80s were actually custodial disputes
10:14 am
rururocks
kidnapped by janitors?
10:15 am
MollyL
If a non-custodial parent takes a child, that IS kidnapping.
10:15 am
mael
of course it is
10:16 am
mael
but it's got ZERO to do with laws about leaving your kid in the car of the parking lot
10:16 am
mael
most kids are abducted during visitation
10:18 am
MollyL
All I can tell you is that I got left in a car when I was six and managed to get the car into neutral and if not for a very nice man passing by, I would have rolled out into traffic. There are reasons for the laws.
10:18 am

10:20 am

10:20 am
ch1212
Again, the statistical probability is wildly overblown by media and parents. 73 million kids in the U.S., and 400,000 "abducted" last year, the vast majority by parents and friends. That's a 0.0054 chance your kiddo will be abducted. On the other hand, there's a 100% change your kiddo will be exposed to extreme images of violence, pornography, etc. with unsupervised access to a computer, smart phone, or tv.
10:21 am
ch1212
100% CHANCE, not change -- lol!
10:21 am
rururocks
there's a joke there somewhere about Molly and the stick shift.. but I'll let it go
10:21 am
mael
there are absolutely real dangers that we are better at addressing now, like safety in a moving vehicle. Car seats save lives. Fencing pools saves lives.
10:22 am
mael
but statistically, not letting your kid walk home from school is not preventing much of anything besides learning how to live in this world responsibly
10:22 am
origami
I had horses and would go off riding in the hills alone when I was 12 or so. One of them threw me off once about 5 miles from home.
10:22 am
MollyL
I tried to ensure my kids were never in situations where they could be in danger of abduction. Kids can be and are taken from parked cars.
10:23 am
rururocks
wow ori

rururocks
did you break anything?
10:23 am
MollyL
Ha ha Ru. It was three on the tree, this was the 60's
10:24 am
mael
I just don't worry about abduction, in the grand scheme of things. It would be like constantly worrying about the possibility that they might have a brain tumor. I worry more about my kids being bitten by dogs while we're on a walk than I do about random strangers. Stranger danger is hugely overblown.
10:25 am
MollyL
Wow, I disagree. But then, I know someone who used to work for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Stranger danger is not overblown. There are A LOT of weirdos out there. And child pornography is rampant these days.
10:27 am
mael
again, most missing children are runaways (often times for good reason, unfortunately) or taken by a non-custodial parent
10:27 am
rururocks
oh.. I'd worry about my kids being run over by crazy Boston drivers
10:27 am

most child abuse happens not from strangers, but from family members or acquaintances

The Duggar guy was not just abusing his own family.
10:29 am

no, he also downloaded child pornography

which was probably created by someone abusing children they knew, not ones they kidnapped off the street
10:29 am
rururocks
how sick do you have to be to do that?
10:30 am

it's horrifying that it is mostly family members, but that's the reality. Most pedophiles abuse children they have access to

Okay, so everyone can relax. Your kids are perfectly safe. Remember, you heard it here, stranger danger is overblown.
10:34 am
mael
I mean, I heard it from the actual stats, molly :)
10:34 am
MollyL
Although I think the thousands of parents whose children are abducted by strangers would disagree.
10:34 am
mael
it's less than 100 per year in the US, Molly
10:35 am
mael
and I feel for their parents, obviously
10:35 am
mael
it's devastating
10:35 am
mael
and terrifying
10:36 am
mael
but it doesn't rule my life, much like plane crashes don't stop me from taking my kids on vacation. I worry much more about more prevalent dangers, like drowning and car accidents and bullying and drug use, etc
10:36 am
origami
I would add gun violence to my list of worries.
10:37 am
mael
though thankfully we're a little insulated from that here in MA
10:39 am
MollyL
I'm not suggesting that people worry about anything. It is just a good idea to be as safe as possible regarding your kids. Because you don't get a do-over when you come out of the store and find an empty car. And don't tell me that doesn't happen, because it does.
10:39 am
ch1212
Molly, it's clear you are entrenched in your narrative, but I invite you to consider this: no parent can protect their child from every single danger, but we can prioritize the dangers, and in addition, teach our kids how to deal with danger. For example, I'm not going to submit my kiddo to potentially traumatizing fear of being abducted while getting off the school bus, but I am going to foster open communication about harassment and sexual abuse, which is almost 1000x more likely to happen to my child before they reach the age of 18. I'm also going to train my kid how to safely navigate through the world, such as crossing the street, etc. At a certain point, common sense comes into play.
10:40 am
mael
I'm much much more concerned about my child being exposed to anti lgbt attitudes, for example
10:40 am
mael
because I know that, statistically, lgbt youth are at a much much higher risk of suicide attempts
10:41 am
ch1212
And Molly, I understand your fears, grounded in reason or not -- and respect your right to express them. Please respect our opinions too.
10:42 am
MollyL
I am not "entrenched in a narrative". I do have my opinions about children and safety. I don't believe any parent is wrong for putting the safety of their children as a top priority.
10:42 am
mael
that's what I worry about. About them being bullied at school and it affecting their mental health. About them getting into a car with a drunk peer when they're older.
10:43 am
ch1212
Again, none of the opinions expressed here are 'right' or 'wrong.' They just are.
10:44 am
MollyL
"grounded in reason or not" That is respect for my opinion folks.😊
10:44 am
mael
the problem is just that we, as parents, can't make that decision anymore. I can't make a judgement call that it's safe to leave my kids in the car at the store for 15 minutes, or to teach them to walk off the bus when it's age appropriate (and that's going to differ child to child, obviously).
10:46 am
origami
ch1212 - "grounded in reason or not" is pretty snarky.
10:47 am
MollyL
The problem is we need a middle ground. We don't want to go back to the days when parents like Ru's could go off and leave a 5 year old alone for the weekend. (Please God don't let someone argue that we should)
10:47 am
mael

there are definitely ways in which we need to keep children safer, but it's a challenge to identify what is statistically significant and what isn't because it's an EMOTIONAL reaction most of the time. We're afraid of strangers more than we are of grandpa Charlie, or whatever, but one of them is definitely more likely to abuse your kids and it ain't the stranger
10:48 am
MollyL
Still are 😊

We do need a middle ground. We have to protect children but let them make mistakes and grow into adults. They can't do that when watched like a hawk every second of every day.
10:49 am
MollyL
Time to put your bow tie picture back up Ru.

I apologize. It wasn't intended to be snarky, I was thinking about how the narrative has gotten so overblown despite the hard facts and stats. There are a lot of people who believe a lot of narratives that have questionable evidence to support them. But you're right, it did sound snarky, and I apologize!

but to make a parallel: I want to be free, as a parent, to demystify alcohol for my teens. I don't want them to sneak it and I don't want them to binge. I want them to try it and learn, not feel like it's this forbidden fruit that they will have to gorge on at parties
10:51 am
MollyL
As stated earlier, none of what I said is based on some irrational fear. I know someone who used to work for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
10:53 am
MollyL
Oh, good chance that no matter how much you "demystify it" they will do both those things.
10:53 am
MollyL
Are you going to do that with drugs too?

Again, Lickety has been alerted. I'm sure he will fix things next time he's around.
