Judi, ya proper nouns are not accepted. There are of course exceptions. One of them being swede, which is another name for rutabaga. Other 'proper nouns' that are accpeted are names that are also another thing like melissa, river, or acacia. Any name I see in a puzzle I always try, because you never know. Its total trial and error. Welcome to Babble and good luck:)
